I took my 2016 TRD-OR DCLB in for routine service today. I've had it 5 months and racked up 14,000 miles. I got a wild hair up my ass to revisit F-150's and also see if I could test drive the new Colorado/Canyon Babymax diesel. Why?

Well I recently returned from a 6 day 1,200 mile hunting trip and what really got my goat is that my friends new full size GMC 4 door with a V8 got better mileage than my Tacoma. We rode aound the forest roads in his rig because he has better range and economy, and we were 60 miles from the nearest gas station.

I've been pretty underwhelmed by the Tacoma. To put it bluntly the power train blows donkey balls. Erratic shifting (even with the TSB), pretty piss poor mileage on western highways... I get better mileage in city driving than open highway- and I've got the stock wheels and tires back on. Everything else about this truck is great- ergonomics, interior, fit and finish (except the vibrating hood)- but I really don't like the powertrain.

I talked to the GM dealer and they have a new Colorado 'Midnight Special' 4 door long bed diesel on the lot. They are loaned it to me until Monday. I get to put this to the paces alongside the Tacoma.

It had 15 miles on it when I left the dealer, and I put 43 on it going up a long, steep grade north of town and then back down. I averaged 26mpg on the new motor, no erratic upshifting, downshifting- just pure linear torque. Very smooth, vibration and clatter free.

    Very nice powertrain. More tomorrow.....

So you @ZachMX and @maypearl all dumping your turd gen Tacomas. Don't blame you

I put in another thread I rode around for 2 hours in gmc Denali 1500. $62,000 truck. V8 was intoxicating

After my TRD pro, I need v8 in my life

Good luck with the trade !

It'll be fun to test them side by side. Don't know which way I'm going to go, but I do know by spring my Tacoma is gone. My wife and I chatted and we may get a full size truck, then a used FJ for fun. I also still have my 98 Jeep Cherokee as a dedicated trail rig...

I bet the Colorado wins on a lot of fronts with the exception of maybe departure angle/off road capability over the tacoma. My only hesitation would be resale and long term reliability, 2 things the taco wins hands down (well presumably on reliability for this gen, though I too have my doubts).

I dunno...performance aside I just can't get over how ugly those Colorados are....there was one in front of me on my way to work today. Very plain and blah

I agree on the resale thing, but if I like a truck I tend to hold them.

My last truck was a 98 Dodge 3/4 ton 24v diesel, 5spd. I bought it used with 75K on the odo for $18,000 back in 2005. I sold it last April for $14,000 with 250K on the ODO. Talk about resale, lol.

Boring yes, but the lines are a lot cleaner, over a 10 year span, design wise the colorado would be more appealing than the 3rd gen, 3rd gen though modern and cool now has some odd non flowing lines that won't likely hold a classic appeal/look years from now.

My only problem with the twins is ridiculous bed height

Can't access anything from the side

Comparing gas to diesel? Wonder how that's gonna play out. Tacoma trd off road has aerodynamics of a brick, gms all have air dam aside from Zr2 model.

For me that's a benefit. I haul pellets, wood- I can stack more. Plus I've slept in the bed of my Tacoma with a Bestop and the extra room would be handy when using it like a mobile tent.

Nice thing is I have 4 drivers in the family, so we can all use a set of metrics to see how they really stack up.

My wife's first impression on the Colorado is that the seats suck. I test drove a V-6 Colorado 5 months ago before I purchased the Tacoma and thought the same thing.

Has anyone who had a 3rd gen tacoma v6 driven a v6 colorado?

The 2017 model year colorado now has an updated version of the v6 and new 8 speed auto (only with v6)... wonder if that hunts for gears.

I do know my 2014 silverado (had a new 6spd for that year) did the same bullshit 1st to 2nd delay as my tacoma did before the TSB but it was more violent.
