can't tell from the pics.... are those mudguards floppy? if yes, which ones are they exactly. I'm debating between a set with "4WD" or nude girl silhouette graphics.

The D ring usually won't fail. But straps will fail. And if you have a kinetic energy recovery type, you have now created a potential sling shot.

Here is an example of a recovery rope failing and the improper attachment of two ropes (using a D-Ring). The tailgates of both trucks were destroyed. The D-Ring when completely though one tailgate.

If the strap snaps, instead of the ends flying around and hitting something, that makes it drop straight to the ground. It's a safety thing.

So I assume you place this near the hitch? what if the strap snaps, say, half way down the line? (sorry, total newbie question)

No worries! If you have one, you place it in the middle. If you have two, you place one on each end, about 1/4 of the way in, towards center (hope that makes sense). So with a 30' line, you'd place it 5-8 feet from each hitch.

OR you could buy like 15 of them, and just cover the whole strap in them. Then you're ultra safe :D

My understanding was that you loop the line through itself to secure it. Unfortunately I couldn't find any pictures.

Also, I have a rope that came with two shackles, so I'm thinking I could also attach one of the shackles to it if absolutely necessary.

    No.

Also, that sounds like a tow strap (one hook on each end). A tow strap and recovery strap are two totally different entities and cannot replace each other. However, in the right situation, a recovery strap can be used as a tow strap.
