im checking out a 2006 4runner with 137,000 miles & the frame looks pretty good minus a few spots. Any opinions would be great! I'll attatch some pics.

Not too bad, but not great either. The 4Rs don't have near the rust issues as the Tacomas, which is good. Most of that could probably be wire wheeled and then painted. Where is this truck and where do you live?

@Wishbone Runner I live in Salt Lake City, Utah & thats where the 4runner is. It doesn't look too bad compared to other frames i've looked at out here. The only downside the guy is only giving me $5000 for my trade in I owe $6500 on. I'm not too big on having that much negative equity, granted my trade in does need a new AC compressor, pads & rotors, & the clear coat is coming off in multiple spots on my trade in. But the dealer doesn't know about the compressor, pads, or rotors. Rough trade in on my Civic is $5100, Average $6000, & clean $6750. I do plan on maintaining the 4runner bettet than my Civic lol.

If you are willing to spend the time to clean it up, it looks like it should hold up, not near as bad as the other one you posted. Here is what you can do with a little determination and elbow grease, mine had a pretty good amount of surface rust prior to this.

How much? I think that looks typical for a 10 year old Toyota. Wire brush, paint, and fluid film.

They will always start on the lowest end for trade in.

@DriverSound $11,500 with a $5000 trade in owe $6500 on. He started at $4500 for my trade in & came up to $5000, but that's still a lot of negative equity. What do you think?

Details on the civic and the 4runner? Have you tried carmax at all to see how much they would offer you for your civic?

@DriverSound its a 2009 Civic EX with 88,000 miles. It needs a new AC compressor, rear brake pads & rotors, & there is clear coat coming off everywhere on it. The dealer would have to re-paint it. & no I have not tried carmax

Mileage is pretty low. I don't really recommend trading in with a negative $1,500. I would say at least try to get that difference down to $500 then come up with $500 down so you start fresh on the loan. Try Carmax for the buy on your car or other dealership that does car buys without you having to buy from them.

As far as the 4Runner goes, are you looking at RWD or 4x4? Widen your search a little bit. Might be worth an hour or two drive.

@DriverSound unfortunately I have no money to put down, so does settling on a $1000 difference sound logical? I'm looking for 4x4 because I drive in the snow pretty often, but i've looked most placss within a 200 mile radius of Salt Lake.

@DriverSound no i've never seen that one, but 179,000 miles kind of worries me. I'm not too car saavy if something were to go wrong.

Yeah, it's on the high side. Was just wondering if that was the rusty frame one. Not sure what you are using for search but you're right, slim selections over there. From my experience, I'd rather have a high mileage well maintained vehicle than a low mileage abused one. Only thing is that you can't tell buying from a used car dealership. I'd say go to Carmax first to see what they are willing to give you just for comparison. Just FYI, biggest issue I've encountered on a 4th gen 4Runner is the hydraulic brake system. Brake master/booster isn't cheap. Do some research on the issue.

@DriverSound yeah & the 4runner for $11,500 has most service record up until 98,000 miles, but once the 2nd owner took over there were none. It seemed to drive great though. Is there anything I can look/listen/ or feel for to tell if the hydraulic brake system is any good?

The brake accumulator would cycle much too often on our 2007. You'll feel a little vibration on the pedal whenever it activates. You have to pay close attention as it's very subtle. If it's cycling like every 15 seconds, it can be a sign that it's on its way out.

Have you looked at this one?

Also if I needed the 4wd, I'd go for it.

@DriverSound Im not even sure what a brake accumulator is lol. I definitely need 4x4 I work at Snowbird ski resort so im on the mountain atleast 6 days a week. Resorts around here average 500 inches of snow per year, but yeah man I actually test drove that one, but they would only give me $3000 for my trade.

$3k? Talk about low balling. Tell them $3k for your trade in and $10,500 for theirs.
