I pretty much have the same setup as the OP, Ceramic dripper and a 2 cup Hario hand grinder. Does a decent job... I have a low/mid end espresso machine, rancillo rocky burr grinder, small french press, small auto coffee drip machine and a aero press. They pretty much collect dust. I may start using the aero press again if I'm not too lazy...

If you want to try some decent budget beans, I found that the Trader Joes Costa Rican bean has pretty good overall flavor. $6.99 for 13oz. It is a medium/dark roast but does not have a burnt taste like a french roast +.

There is no shortage of coffee roasters in the bay area, CA. I'll go to Peet's to pick up fresh beans from time to time.

what kind of roaster do you use? Sweet Marias has Yemen in right now. Very small beans so you'll need a fresh roast or a roaster basket with very small holes. Very good coffee

I bought one of the original HotTop roasters from SM. I've put over 1200 roasts through it and its still running strong. Haven't had any problems with small beans or peaberries. They've been having trouble getting Yemen beans due to the political unrest over there so it's good they finally got some. Lots of small farmers being hurt due to not being able to sell their coffee beans. I might need to get an order in soon. Thanks for the heads up.

    What they said.

I use a handmade roaster from a guy from Colorado.
Sweet Marias, Happy Mug, Green Coffee Buying Club, etc.

Life is too short to drink bad coffee.

I thought I'd give these guys a try and have liked the last two bags I've had. Always order whole bean. I use the aero press probably 50% of the time and then swap between the pour over and French press just to mix it up sometimes.

I'm sure every state/region has a good quality local coffee company. Here's my favorite.

    http://www.carrabassettcoffee.com

Only make coffee at home on weekends using a French press and have a few flavors on hand in those old fashioned gasket sealed Mason jars as I easily get bored of the same flavor.

Thats all my woman drinks so ive been slowly switching over to that. I usually have the stuff i made every morning (folgers, black silk) and the stuff only i drink ( since i dont roast or anything, its usually some dark robust roast from starfux). A good french press is phenomenal and so is the old percolater i have.

Thank to tw and this thread, i may have to start a new hobby of roasting some beans! I love coffee, just limited to what a broke man can get!

Bona Vita recently added the glass carafe model in the new line of brewers that do a pre-infusion cycle.
    http://bonavitaworld.com/products/glass-carafe-coffee-brewer-warming-plate-8-cup
"A pre-infusion cycle evenly saturates the ground coffee before brewing, an essential step for obtaining the finest flavor from the beans."

If I did not already have a Technivorm I would pull the trigger on that one.

    AND..
George Howell out of Boston area & Mountain Air in Asheville, NC are the only commercial coffees I buy.

There is a local brewer here that sells them, his customer service is crazy, i called him yesterday afternoon, said i was getting low and needed to get some Monday, he said he would not allow me to run out of his coffee this weekend and left me a bag on his back door (could not get there till after work) to get me by till next week (and he did not charge me for it either)

I've always been partial to Seattles Best. I use their medium roast. If I go to Starbucks I get an iced americano. There's also a local chain here called rook. Thier New Orleans coffee if amazing but it's like $5 a cup.

Reviving this old thread. Big fan of coffee and the variety of ways it can be prepared and enjoyed. Recently spent some time on Kona and did a plantation tour. Was neat to see an actual working plantation, Greenwell farms. They seemed less like a tourist trap, and didn’t charge for their tour or coffee samples.

My day to day coffee right now is the SF Bay French roast. My personal favorite, both for its flavor and budget friendly cost. My boss said he was going to get me some specialty Yemeni coffee that had to be smuggled out of the country due to the ongoing conflict there. Supposedly some of the best coffee in the world. Seems like a marketing approach to me, and it is something like $50 for 4 ounces.
