What tire is everyone running for winter?

A closeup the 245/70R17 ig51v tread. Even though i went from a 265 to a 245 tread width these still look very wide compared to every winter tire i have used in the last 40 years

Now these are described as replica wheels. The factory ones are 5 spoke, these are 6 spoke. Anyone know if toyota ever used this wheel design? They fit perfect, just curious what year/model they are actually replicas from?

Wheels came with lugs nuts. After i had mounted the last wheel I looked in the box the lugs nuts came in and there was a extra washer. So i had to undo and check every single one on the truck to see which one was missing the washer. And of course it was the second to last one that was the culprit.

 

For anyone running DuraTracs this winter, how well did they do yesterday? My stock Dunlops were of course crap, but I didn't have to leave the house until the afternoon when the main roads had just melted leaving slick problems on side roads. I hate paying someone to change tires, or reprogram my ECU for more than 1 TPMS every season, so I was thinking of running these all year. Just curious how the DuraTracs performed on slick packed snow.

My MTR's aren't that bad at all until after I break friction, then they are a little slicker than the studs I'm used to.

 

Now I have never owned Durtrac's or even been in a vehicle that had them.

Looking at the tread pattern I would think they would be a good snow tire but they dont seem to have the tread compunds and extensive siping you see on the likes of the blizzak, X-ice, Ice Guard etc.
Based strictly on that visual comparison I would expect their performance on ice to be marginal.

 

Well they are the standard tire for almost all the north slope trucks for a reason.

 

Meh, depends on who owns it. Delta loves to use stock tires, then whatever they have laying around. My currently leased truck from AFC (current work truck) uses a set of BFG Rugged Trails, but I've seen mixed tires. I'm unfamiliar with what ConocoPhilips or BP use. Never really paid attention when I worked those sides of the field. I've seen a hodgepodge of tires up there lately.

City truck kinda guy, Michelin LTX M/S 2 year round.
Don't have budget for new wheels and winter tires and I refuse to destroy tires remounting every season.

 

Necro Bump:

My 5/6 year old Duratracs are getting too hard for winter use. I'd rather use them for summer tires and get dedicated winters after a few close calls last season.

What's everyone using these days? Looking for dedicated studded snow tire with a some-what aggressive tread pattern.

after 5 years i am still running my Yokohama ig51v. They have lots of tread depth left but this is probably due to the low miles i put on them. Truck is 5 years old and less than 50,000 miles. And now that i have retired it will be even less... Keep asking the the kids who wants a 20+ year old tacoma in my will since at this rate it will still be running great

Cooper AT3 4s did fine for their first Fairbanks winter, not as good the second after 20k miles. Found a cheap set of winter forces with studs on Facebook so those are my current winter tire. Gonna keep my Maxxis MT762’s on through the first couple snows just to see how they do though.

We run blizzaks w965’s on the work van and they’re great.

These have served me well for the last 7 seasons. i have had them since 2012. i didn't run them the first year due to the current set of tires were fine for that winter.

 

Its been 10+ years since I've dealt with a new set of studded tires. Who in the Anchorage area studs tires these days? Thinking of just getting a second set of Duratracs and having them studded.

 

I’ve got a 3rd gen, am I hearing duratracs aren’t that great in anchorage? Do most prefer studded or actual winters?
