I think they've just had the Toyota kool-aid. They honestly, sincerely believe in the reliability of Toyota's so when a new owner comes in with a problem they just dont believe its a problem.

I experienced surging after the second consecutive tank of 87 octane fuel. switched back to 91 octane ethanol free and surging is gone. My long term fuel trims are showing rich (negative values) so the truck is pulling fuel due to ethanol free gasoline. This tendency to run rich in open loop conditions is likely providing a healthy safety net against detonation on top of being higher octane which helps smooth out the powerband.

Mine does the same thing, I've had it a month. A shutter feeling when accelerating, mines an auto.

Just had the ECU reflashed at the dealer with the new SW which updated 11/19. Completely solved the problem. I took a picture of the details for you.

... and is there a version for the manual transmission?

**update** Nevermind. That looks like the transmission update for shifting problems and not one for the engine surging or lagging.

Most likely from resetting the learned values (ie knock correction). You been running 87 octane?

the surging could be from crappy gas.

Mine has done it every time I've driven it, including the test drive at the dealership.

I had this tsb done last week. I initially thought the "surging" was fixed, not the case though. It does shift better now, and no more delay shifting into drive.

I just bought a '17 3.5L M/T. I only have 200 miles on it so far, but have not noticed any issues. I live in Western NY and the weather is getting pretty cold. I certainly keep on eye out for it now. I park in a garage and let it warm up 5 mins before driving usually. If it does start happening, first thing I'll do it try better gas. Just using regular 87 right now.

The AC cycling on/off might be the source of most of this. At the very least it's the source of the "miss" when idling. Mine very consistently dips in RPM and lightly shakes the shifter every ~15 seconds when the AC is on. If in 1st going ~5mph for a long stretch the dip will create a some what significant "buck"... basically yields the same result as would letting off the gas and reapplying while in 1st.

As for the surging I know exactly what you're describing.. mine does it too. Sometimes worse than others. I think it's a combination of the AC cycling and the power curve of the engine. I'll try to dig up the dyno that's some where on this site but the engine very clearly and significantly dips in power around 2k rpms.

I think this is mostly due to the engine changing its timing e.g. VVTi mine does the same. It's normal.

Perhaps the surging is a combination of the changing timing on the valve train and the d4s system simultaneously switching over to direct injection

I agree. It is nothing concerning. I'd say it is more annoying than anything.

Yeah I was really confused at first. Then I researched the engine and talked to an engineer and he explained to me what was happening.

If you want to go down that road; AICS also switches the intake runners between short and long, as well.
