Twice in two weeks my engine light came on running code P0450. My current gas cap doesn't click when turning as it says it should do my first diagnostic is to replace the gas cap. Question is, do I get the OEM from Toyota in my neighborhood for $35, get the OEM from eBay and wait longer to get it https://www.ebay.com/itm/112009654693 or get one off Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000B8JUNY/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_cFnqybKZJHQ36

If the original gas cap is still made by Stant, does that mean that the Stant gas caps one can buy at Autozone etc. are made to the same specifications as the one that came with the truck when the truck was first sold? I'm thinking that maybe what's available now might be made to a lesser specification.

Of course, I don't know what a Stant gas cap looks like nowadays because the last one I bought was a locking one back in 1979 during when lines at the gas stations were pretty long and stealing gas from parked cars was in vogue.

My gas cap does not say "Stant" on it. A small letter "S" is embossed on the top edge and the words "Made in the U.S.A." are embossed on the rim along with an SAE number. The cap has no other markings inside or out. I bought the truck with 6 miles on it from a dealer, and its seal is still flexible, without cracks, and seals great.

Ran over mine 2 years ago when I was hunting, went across the street and bought one at NAPA for $10. Been fine since.

Pick one up at NAPA and don't worry, it's plastic with a small vent valve to the charcoal can and an o-ring not the integral seal to a submersible battle ship.

Looking at my gas cap again, I realized the rubber o ring wasn't sitting at top. I remember pushing it back up the first time the light came on after filling up. Looks like it did it again after filling up again and the light has gone and stayed off. Cap still doesn't click as it says it should but if the lights off I'll live with it for now.

There's an O-ring on the cap to keep water out and to prevent fuel vapors from leaking out. The fuel door doesn't keep out the elements. If you drive off-road, the area inside the fuel door gets quite dusty. I usually hose out the area after a wheeling trip.

Cool thanks for the reassurance. Im sure they have some sort of seal but wasnt sure. I didn't know direct hose spray is safe to do.

Just curious what year did they go to a O ring ??

I bet the O ring is simple to replace when it gets worn and starts to leak.

Mine still has a gasket and it was easier to just get a new cap then replace the gasket

Been using the same Stant locking gas cap since 2010. Had this cap on my 2gen. The 3gen uses the same part number/cap listed with Stant. Moved it over from my 2gen when I traded up.

I keep an extra gas cap in my vehicles over the years my fumble fingers have dropped the gas cap and it rolls under the truck and gets run over.

Ends up under another vehicle the driver vanishes inside seems like for good waiting 20 minutes was long enough install the new cap and leave.
