    I had a v6 2005 manual for 5 years (second gen ) , and I just got an 08 manual 4 banger.

I haven't done calculations yet, but I can say without a doubt the four banger is getting better mileage.

They are both double cabs, and honestly it almost seems like I'm getting twice as much mileage.

The v6 would average below 15 city, and this four banger is definitely around twenty or above.

I'll make sure to do some calculations and report back.

Also, I drive my trucks with a heavy foot.

Hyper driving is when you've had WAY TOO MUCH coffee and chased it with a couple of Red Bulls?

I thought the 2nd gen 4-cylinder double cab models came out around 2014?
Prior to that, 4-cylinder models were either access cab or regular cabs.

I get right around 20mpg. Give or take depending on the temperature. I idle A LOT. It gets so cold here that I have warm it up and let it run pretty much all the time. The usual warm up is at least 10 minutes. When it's below 30 degrees. If I stop to fuel, I let it idle. If I stop to go into a store, I let it idle. If it's down around 0 degrees? It idles while I go shopping. My 3RZ idles a lot! It's the way it is in the real world where it gets really cold. Idling saves on starters and batteries when the temp really drops. Since there is no gas shortage and there never has been it's not a problem. If I spend a day running around on trails which I can't do, for the most part, of the winter I get around 15 mpg when off road. Mine is a daily driver so I "can" go places where I don't go because there is no point in "thrashing" the daily driver for no reason.

I added a new wheel/tire package, and a cap since this ... and we've had a warm few days which enabled me to test mpg once again. I took this screen shot of my Torque dashboard, and have since driven about 75 more miles and currently sitting at 25.7 for overall average. Accuracy has been within .1mpg. Basically no change with all the mods, I'm pretty happy with that.

Upper left is instant read mpg, to the right of that is overall average (reset about a half mile prior to this fuel up). Lower right mpg gauge is trip average. Average mph to the right side is for moving avg only.

I'm headed out to Ohio tomorrow, but I'll likely only get about 22mpg ... since I like to bump my speed up to 70 on really long trips to save time.

I lied, never did start walking to work. Worst tank ever 428.3 miles on 18.611 gallons for 23.0 mpg. Not many long drives. Oh well it's almost spring.

I've noticed that it works as well. It seems to boil down to not going over 50mph as much as you can get away with. I like to lay off the gas going downhill. Also adjusting my speed ahead of a stop helps too. Simple things that can make big differences.

The vast majority of that just isn't feasible where I live. The winters are too harsh, the wind is off the charts, the temps are too low and you get run over by Super Duties and semi's if you're doing less than 75 mph. Yes, about half of it could be done but not all of it.

I drive easy. I once had 289 miles on the trip gauge when reaching exactly half a tank. It's usually 250+.
I experimented with 5w30 oil, and would reach the half tank mark at 235-238 miles...so no more 5w30 for me.
I have a 2016 SR 4x4 AC manual trans with stock wheels and tires. I also have the LCE header which helped the fuel economy considerably. Before the header, 250 miles to the half tank mark with me trying hard was my personal best. Now I can do that without thinking much about it and running around with the air conditioning on about half the time. The engine is smoother too.
I ordered the AFE pro dry s air filter and will do the charcoal filter delete soon.

I'm seriously kicking around getting a 4cyl tacoma as my daily. My commute is exactly this (san diego to LA) and my driving habits are exactly this as well.

I've been reading this thread and numbers seem to be all over the place. I know a lot of it has to to with driver habits and such. Right now I'm looking to get a Toyota Matrix because it can actually haul a small trailer or a 4cyl tacoma. Decisions, decisions

Well it all comes down to whether you prioritize MPG or ultimate utility. Keep in mind my Taco was a regular cab, 2wd and 5 MT. It might be harder to get better MPG with the other trims. The matrix is a good car.

I avarage around 19 mpg but I idle a LOT as cold as it gets here. I let it warm up for 10 mins. or so in the morning and if I stop at a convenience store or something on my way to work I don't shut it off. Even if I go shopping where I'll be in there for 20 mins I let it idle if its down around zero degrees. I've gotten as high as 24 mpg. I also live in the mountains and everywhere I go there is a hill or a steep grade and the speed limit here is 75 or 80 mph so if you're doing anything less than 70 mph you get run over by the hundreds of Super Duties around here. I've gotten as low as 14 mpg if I spend a day on the weekend driving around on trails.
