Best GPS for trip out west

Hey guys, iv'e been thinking about getting a GPS for my road trip out west next year. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of any that would be a good fit with maps of national parks and possibly any off road trails such as Big Bear pass in Colorado. Any help with personal experiences or any pointers would be great! Thanks!

 

Map and Compass you need to try really hard to break a compass .

Electronics fail at the worst times

 

I use a combination of Google maps and osmand maps with a

$166 Dual xgps160 Multipurpose Universal 5 Device Bluetooth GPS Receiver with Wide Area Augmentation System and Portable Attachment

Dual xgps160. The combination of those (downloading maps before hand) got us through 900miles in BFE Kentucky.

Also a paper Delorme map for emergency

 

You want something that doesn't require cell service.

Garmin has been excellent for me, for a sit on dash portable. Versitile for other things too. Just be sure to pick a lifetime maps model.

Delorme has a great laptop based unit that has a lot of flexibility if you have the space to work with it.

In new areas of secondary roads or offroad, I prefer paper maps. And I always have dear old dad's WWII army issue pocket compass on board. Primative, but functional.
