on my last thread about oil dummy light comes on during idle on my 99 prerunner 2.7 3rz motor i replace the sender bc Autozone was out of manual pressure tester.light was gone for a day then comes back again during idle 800-1000 rpm
So i went under and remove the oil pan and found the pick up oil tube completely blocked with this black charcoal thing idk whats that
Does anybody know what is this?
Also im thinking to replace the tube instead of cleaning it

How often do you change your oil, because that black material looks like sludge and you may want to clean out the sludge before replacing the oil port.

Does anyone else think his engine looks covered in sludge?

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Yep, Sludge. I have also herd of different types of oil doing this, even if you change your oil on a regular basis. Usually cheep motor oil.

How deep was it in the pan? Might be a good idea to take a peek at the top end also.

All my life all my prev car (civic,240sx,tacoma,corolla,prius) i used castrol conventional oil 5w20 or 5w30
I guess its change back to mobil1
My buddy is mechanic at mercedez benz said dont use any conventional oil because this will will happen in the long run of your engine

I remember Toyota had a class action lawsuit over sludge here => https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/01/toyota_sludge_settlement.html

    Wut?

My questions, and my .02 opinion before the questions are answered.

    What is your normal OCI?

Are you consistent with a brand/SAE rating you use? What is it?

    Filter of choice?

Frankly, it just looks like neglect. But a picture on the internet is not always easy to diagnose.

Drop some of the particulate off the pickup in a container with a little mineral spirits in it. If it's sludge, it should dissolve with a bit if agitation.

    Whats OCI?
Always use castrol 5w20 with fram filter for years
About to dip them in degreaser

    Yep. Like '99 Camry's. Been a while.

I don't think this one is the motors fault.

Yep, RZ engines found the Taco are free of the sludge issue....at least in terms of small oil passages. Hard to say exactly what happened here. Looks like several possible reasons

So what did degreaser prove? Sludge?

    And what were your OCIs?

That mess didn't occur based on one missed or over run change interval. That's been a long time in the making...........

Just for reference, here's a kind of picture of what my P/U tube looked like on my 3rz when I dropped the pan this summer. This is with 175K on the motor.

Id say pushing the oil to far between changes and fram filters are garbage. Castrol is great oil comes in many high end German cars and corvettes from the factory . Id blame this on lack of maintenance !
