I have a 2013 Tacoma TSS 4x4 but it did not come with a backup camera. I am interested in installing one. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will the display come up on the radio face or the mirror? Can you recommend the best camera and kit for the job?

Check out camera-source. They sell kits. If you are pre-wired the less parts you need to order.

Ok, thanks. How can I tell if it's pre-wired and it the backup screen comes up on the mirror or the radio face?

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Open the tailgate and see if there are wires there.

Pull the overhead console and confirm a plug is tucked away ready to connect to the correct mirror (OE position).

    Likely you will find both.

Then you need to source the correct camera (pin count changed mid year, look at your plug while tailgate is open)

If you want it in the mirror, you'll want to source the correct mirror that has the gridlines built in.

If you want to try to make a dash display, you'll need to look at the aftermarket conversion kit like suggested above. Warning, it will only work with certain levels of audio/video displays. I think you need the higher end unit than my base had, so I just went with the mirror, no regrets.

Hi guys I have almost the same car and problem. i have 2013 Tacoma, extended cab 4x4. Purchased aftermarcket camera and harness, so I can connect camera to my display. My tilegate is prewired with 4 wire plug for backup camera. The problem is:
When I reverce and check the wires on that plug with multimeter- there is no 12v betwen ground and any of the wires. Any ideas why?
Also, acording this plug - reverce wire is black!!! Shouldn't be solid red?
    I get confused.

OEM toyota cameras run off of 6v power, I believe metra recently came out with a harness for oem camera to aftermarket radio.

I am trying to connect aftermarket camera to OEM display. have preset 6v plug on tailgate. Do you thing that if I buy OEM camera and plug it will show on display. Need to be sure-already spend 60$ on Harnesses and aftermarket camera. No idea how much will be the original one. Thanks

    I got the same -ToyCam1.
The problem is-there is not any voltage in this OEM tailgate plug. Neither 12v, nor 6v

I am going to assume that the toy cam1-6v? don't know if just the toy cam1 comes with the step down. also, you do have factory nav? per application it works with Tacoma nav units.
