    Hey Nick, curious why you don't carry your floor jack anymore? Weight? Space? In looking into getting Pro Eagle floor jack for the trails.

    For Mojave style desert wheeling, I think floor jack is best, definitely the safest for tire changes.

    I still carry the factory bottle jack. No plans to ever use it off-road though.

    Since I can't predict when / where I'll need to recover, I carry Hi-lift. It can do many different things, which makes it attractive to me as an off-road tool.

    One nice thing I did for myself was practice strapping the axle to the frame. Using this method, I don't have to jack through the suspension if all I am doing is lifting a tire.

    I would suggest in a chain to go with the hi-lift. Use it as a limit strap when jacking with the hi-lift. Otherwise you'll have to keep jacking and jacking untill the suspension droops out enough to get the tire off the ground and at that point the hi lift is high enough in the air and is just waiting for the right moment to kill you.

    Right, makes perfect sense. Seen lots of pics that look pretty dodgy even on a driveway, let alone some difficult terrain in the middle of nowhere. Good to see you're still lurking, btw!

    Thanks for chiming in, and x2 good to see you around. I've been wanting to pickup a piece of stub chain for a while. There are legitimate times where a strap won't work and only chain will do.

    So I pulled my drivers side spindle off the truck today. Going to go to fabrication, once the passenger side comes off.

    Nearly pulled the hub off with my bare hands. :muscleflexing: :D

    Really easy job with pitman arm puller, breaker bars, liquid wrench, impact gun, etc.

    I hope the passenger side is the same. :pray:

    Oh yeah, almost forgot....I'm sorry. I can't seem to see the scoring because of all the lines in the way. :rolleyes:

    I was amazed at how clean everything was inside for a truck as old as mine.

    CV/Axle seal is in perfect condition, I'm not certain how to get it off the spindle yet...

    I'll be taking Chris up on his offer for the inner tie rods... DS one was a little loose, but no play in the socket. Not sure if that's normal for Toyota. The tie rods on my car with 120K miles on it were in far better shape then my truck with 71K miles.

    EDIT:

    I sequenced the events from memory, I'll verify with pass side.

    Code:
    Jack truck up
    Remove wheel
    Disconnect wheel speed sensor (WSS).
    Open WSS wire retention clips
    Move WSS wire out of the way, I put tape over the socket.
    Remove axle / hub dust cover
    Remove axle nut cotter pin
    Remove retainer nut by hand (Blue nut, aluminum?)
    Break loose axle nut 35mm
    Remove axle nut
    Remove brake line bracket bolt from spindle
    Pry brake pad against rotor to compress caliper pistons
    Remove four (4) 17mm bolts from caliper
    Move and Hang caliper out of the way
    Remove rotor (I used M8 x1.25 screws, thread into rotor, easy)
    Remove tie rod cotter pin
    Loosen tie rod castle nut
    Break loose TRE stud from spindle
    Remove TRE castle nut
    Loosen four (4) captured 17mm hub bolts, thread them all the way out as far as they will go.
    Remove hub from spindle watch the O-ring
    Suspend / support axle shaft with rubber cord to protect CV dust seal
    Remove brake dust shield
    Remove UCA cotter pin
    Break loose UCA nut
    Break loose UBJ stud from spindle
    Remove steering stop attachment bolts 2 x 19mm
    Remove UCA nut
    Spindle is free
    Remove WSS bracket from spindle
    Remove wheel speed sensor from spindle
    Remove dust seal from spindle
    Clean spindle
    Ready to send to fabrication

    The truck was my daily driver for 7 years and 68,336 miles, and 90% of my daily life is in a 3-mile radius. :D

    I got my commuter car back in July and since then, it's saved like 3K miles from the truck. :)

    haha. I'm glad. Enjoy! :) I have so much hate for the stock headrest angle, so glad mine are fixed. My neck finally got better after several months, post mod. :)

    Thanks for the reminder! This has been on my list since I saw it in this build like 100 years ago. Life got crazy, and I just forgot. Now I've got to do it before a long road trip Christmas weekend.

    Putting the Headrest Mod on the List, thanks! I'm sure the Headrests on my '04 were adjustable. They would pivot forward and back. It was a nice option.

    You mentioned liquid wrench, a good poor mans alternative is acetone and ATF mixed up in a spray bottle. Works great!

    You can still get sandals with recycled tire soles in Old Mexico. Made out of some steer leather that's tough as hell. I swear they break in and are the most comfortable sandal you can wear that will last you a decade. If I wore sandals, I might be inclined to make a pair. Closest I get are my slip-on vans.
