Getting ready to install my rack tomorrow morning. How hard is it to remove a mounting bolt after the RTV sealant has cured?

Short answer would be 'however long it takes to get it right'.

I had the proper tools, sealants, masking tape to protect paint, mask and mark drill points off, etc. I had the general background knowledge of how to do the install. Taking my time, i could have done it all in one nice Saturday afternoon - but i took a break, and finished it on the Sunday morning.

I spent as much time measuring, checking, rechecking, repositioning, eyeballing, and rechecking again, as i did actually using tools of potential destruction. I didn't drop the roof liner.

Edit - Sorry, just realized the OP has a DC, not an AC .. which is a bit more involved.

^^^ Absolutely agree with all of this. After worrying and fretting rechecking and re-measuring it was not too bad. Full afternoons work. After you put this rack on cutting for your snorkel doesn't seem so bad. Atleast to me it didn't. Just my .02. Just realized OP has a DC. Not as involved as my AC.

For future reference, I will answer my own question. Well, partly. With the "help" of my five year old, it took me about 45 minutes to build the rack. Weather strip removal and mounting will occur another evening.

Very nice! Been thinking about getting something like that for the longer trips with multiple people to throw duffel bags and such in.

    Did it!!

A few findings (2017 TRD Pro):

    1) Middle bolts of the mounts took the bolts as shipped. I did buy some shorter ones just in case (30mm and 40mm) but didn't need them after all.

    2) I drilled the holes through the black gutter strips with a 7/8"s bit, but found it to be a little snug once in place - couldn't adjust on the fly enough to make all lie smooth. Re-drilled with 15/16ths and it just gave enough room to slip a bit and lay flat. Odd that a single 16th would be enough. 1" bit was just a bit too wide and would have made the remaining edges of the black strips pretty darn thin.

    3) The rear 2" cross bar wouldn't work in the dedicated holes, due to the antenna. Move it up a bit to the sliding openings, and your fine. Roughly a 3" gap between the two last 2" cross bars.

    4) The final 1" cross bar fit fine with the antenna.

    5) Once the rack is in place, it is damn hard to get any extra silicone in there, so be generous with the silicone before you drop the rack in place.

    6) Get someone to help you so you don't ding the hell out of your roof.

    7) I've got the front cross bar with the fairing in the two middle holes. I wasn't sure how much clearance I would have from the roof. Now that it is in place, I think I can use the two lowest holes for the cross bar and fairing. Will try that in the coming days.

    7) Drink 9 beers.

    Damn.

Forgot one very important point - the rack is beautiful! The pieces came together very well. The quality is excellent.

I sincere appreciate what Zach / Zack has done, and his communication style.

I would buy again and again.

Thanks for the write-up. I have a Cement TRD Pro and just ordered a black railing with silver crossbars. I sure hope all my roof mounts are fine and non are crooked. That makes installing easy. I just need to buy a punch set from Harbor Freight.

One question: What type of silicone did you use? Are those small GE clear silicon tubes sold at Home Depot good enough or I need those sticky/black RTV?
