Why are adapters required......

Hey yall....

I just got my 6x9's and 6.5"'s for DBL Cab. I am ready to install them today but I was told I would need some adapters in order to do the job.

I bought the speakers at Car Toys and asked specifically "if there was anything else I would need to install these speakers" and I was told "NO". After reading on here and asking around on another social media site, I have been given 2 answers....

1. Yes - you need adapters to install any new speaker
2. No - you can cut the factory adapter to make it work

If I have to have the adapters, does anybody have a part number for them? Front and rear would be helpful...

If the factory adapter will work just by simply cutting it, what is it that I am looking to cut?

The best way to know is to pull one apart and look.

It won't take long to know if an adapter is required. It shouldn't be hard to see where to modify an OE adapter if that's the route to take.

Sometimes getting into things yourself provides better answers. Take photos, do a write up, help out those who will follow.

 

yes you can do that which would work great. you can also order or go to a best buy and buy the factory speaker harnesses and just plug it into the factory harness and then connect to new speaker via the spades and correct polarity it has or solder to the new speaker if you so choose.

 

I think the OP is referring to an adapter plate that mounts between the door and the speaker. You may need one to ensure the speaker mounts flush to the door and the mount holes line up. It's easy enough to check by popping one of the old speakers out. Also need to check and make sure that the door panel will go back on without any interference from the new speaker. You could also check with Mr Marv who wrote up a very good upgrade tutorial that's listed in the sticky above. He makes and sells adapter plates, I purchased some from him for my speakers.

 

zinger, you are correct. I didn't even read the orginal post really just piggybacked off post before me. adapters are needed because because of the magnet so it wont hit the window. Toyotas are notorious for needing these. I have seen many times people break/cut out the old speaker and use the factory speaker as a "bracket" to save money. not ideal for me but it DOES work. still disregard if im rambling...haha

 

Is there a write up on how much to cut off or is it really worth the time and effort when I could just order the adapters and have no worries

I did that and I'm at a loss. I'm thinking its better off FOR ME (lol) to buy the speaker adapters and remove all doubt on how to do this properly.

I just don't want to waste time and it not work and I have to get em anyway

 

I assume you bought speakers from cartoy that were selected for your model Tacoma using their fit guide, correct? Cartoy does installs, they should know if an adapter plate is required or not. Talk to their support department and ask them that specific question. If they state that one isn't needed then it probably isn't. Pop the door panel off one of the doors remove the old speaker and fit check it, not that difficult to do. As was mentioned above make sure it doesn't interfere with the window when it's all the way down inside the door. Your new speakers will likely be deeper then the cheap factory speakers.

 

I did buy at Car Toys and I did ask the "salesman".... Even as the speaker adapters showed on the screen when we were checking the fit guide, he said no you dont need them. HE WAS WRONG!!!! LMAO - I knew I should have pushed him a little more to find out why they came up instead of taking his word for it......thats on me!!!!!!

Removed the driver side speaker yesterday and it does in fact either need a new adapter or the factory one needs to be cut. The 6x9's are not even close to fitting in that hole in the door. I now have 3 options. Let a professional do it, order the adapters and wiring harnesses and do it myself or cut the factory bracket... I dont trust myself to cut out the old speakers, only because I cant see where I would be connecting the new speaker to the factory spacer.... If I knew exactly how and where to put the new speaker into the factory bracket I would love to do it myself....

 

Highly recommend spending an hour reading through this thread. Many of us have done sound upgrades on this truck and it's well worth the time/ $$ to do it right.

Here is a pic of a Toyota speaker (maybe a 4Runner or Camry in not a Tacoma) that I cut out to show and I use as a template. You cut as much as you need to fit the new speaker in the hole and your window goes up and down. Don't make it too hard on yourself. Maybe buying the brackets are the way to go. Again as I stated earlier, I don't do this but it WILL work and it can save money and time if you can't buy the plates or make them locally. I make my own for installs and I think there is someone on here that does too. The pre made out of abs will suffice.

 

I ripped my original speaker cones out of the factory plastic and siliconed a set of Sony 6x9 speakers into them. I did this all inside and allowed the silicone to dry thoroughly before reinstalling them. They've worked flawlessly for a year now. Sound great. Didn't purchase a thing.

 

I did find that thread helpful. I found out I know very little about the electronics in my truck and that I need to let a professional do it....

I want it done by someone who at least has some experience.... I have an appt today at 3 for a local shop to install them.....

Update!!!!

Got speakers installed and DAYUM!!!!

Why did I wait 3 years. What a difference. I even found out that my HU was set incorrectly because of cheap speakers.

Now on to the sub or subs. Gotta even out the clear sound with some bottom to my music.
