Parts and labor. Friend of mine who owns a garage in Texarkana says he would have charge me less than $900. I had the work done at a dealership in one of the most expensive zip codes in Bucks County... Dealer markup at it's finest...

Yeah a new Toyota unit will run quite a bit more, plus labor.

I wouldn't worry about the hitch, they don't make them. i wouldn't let uhaul install though. The few uhaul guys I've talked to didn't inspire confidence.

Nice writeup OP. Good to see you have been involved in the details of car ownership from a young age. So many kids today have no clue. My son's friend (17) is getting his dad's Camry. When my son told him my truck is a Toyota too, he argued and said that a Toyota doesn't look like that, a Toyota is a car like his dad's. :)

So, as most of us 2nd gen Tacoma owners know, all 2005-2015 models have come standard with a tilt/telescoping steering column. You all will be surprised how many 2nd gen Tacoma owners I've met over the last 5-6 years who were completely unaware that their trucks had telescoping columns... Here are two such cases.

First time was at a 5K run to benefit Autism Research back in like 2010 or 2011. Refreshments were provided by a company called Belly Brothers that towed a mobile kitchen trailer behind a blue 2006 Tacoma access cab SR5 4x4 with 4.0L/automatic. It was definitely an SR5, but it was NOT A TRD. I was chatting with the owner/vendor about his truck. He was the original owner, and knew that the steering column could tilt, but not that it telescoped. Even though I hadn't had my Taco that long, I'd figured out before I owned one that the steering column could telescope. He was shocked that his truck had this feature.

Another time I was the Spring 2015 swap meet/car show at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. There was a guy with a silver 2005 regular cab 2WD base model, pretty much that exact same truck as mine except a 2005 instead of a 2010. Also impressive was the fact that this 2005 truck had only 55K miles in 2015! He'd owned it for 10 years and never knew it had a telescoping steering column!

I find the telescopic range to be limited - closest setting is barely close enough for my arms. Same with the 3rd gen I tried at the dealer.

Not as funny as my nephew bringing over his brand new Jeep and not knowing it was only 2 wheel drive jeep.

Seriously? So it was a soft-roader!

What are we talking here? Wrangler? Patriot? Grand Cherokee?

I have no idea. I know it was a "station wagon" type of jeep. It looked like a "wheeler", but had no front diff, transfer case or front drive shaft. I actually assumed it was 4 wheel drive. I didn't find out until I had it on the lift giving it a chassis lube. The nephew was beyond pissed. The sales man told him it was 4 wheel drive.
