Windshield Wiper Problems

Hello everyone,

I just registered, but I've been reading this forum for awhile now. For starters, I absolutely love my truck. It's a 4X4 Limited double cab. The only problem I have is with my windshield wipers. I feel ridiculous even having this problem, but it is really making me not want to drive whenever it's raining. My wipers are smooth for the first couple of passes, but then they start to shake and bounce around. I've tried putting new blades on but that didn't help. I tried running them slower to let more water collect on the windshield, but that didn't help either. It made it worse actually. It's like the wiper blade handles aren't putting enough tension against the windshield. I couldn't find any other threads about this, but has anyone else had this problem?

 

I don't take my truck out in rain so not an issue for me.

Having said that look at the two bolts bottom of the windshield holding the arms on. Sounds like factory morons forgot to tighten them down fully

 

try any glass cleaner that has rain x in it.
my parents had the same problem on their forester, told them to try it and it helped. Almost seems to work as a lubricant.

not sure why but ya it worked. Almost seemed as if helped work as a sort of lubricant.

 

Clean the glass.

Barkeepers friend is good to remove everything from the glass.

Then buff it up with any window cleaner you like. Stoners Invisible Glass, or something from an actually glass shop.

 

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I went and looked at the bolts. They seemed pretty tight but I gave them another quarter turn or so. I'll see if that helps. And yeah I'll try using some rain x or the product you linked Joe.

 

I use Rain X on the side and rear windows but never the windshield as it always caused my wiper to jump and skip around. The Rain X Windshield Washer Fluid seems to work pretty good though.

 

I had an auto glass shop put on aquapel for me and its been almost 3 months and it still works great and I very rarely even use my wipers anymore. although it did make them hop around a bit from time to time when I do end up wiping them. Which is usually just in slow moving traffic or when I've been parked for a while.

 

Mine did exactly as you described.....great for the first few passes then chattered like a mofo. Drove me nuts. I solved the problem by using a detailing claybar on the windshield.

 

i didnt like the wipers on my truck. they are a metal style blade with plastic cover. i went to anco contour blades and wasnt impressed. threw on a set of trico force blades and they work great. drove 2 hours in absolute downpour last night and was thinking of how much id hate it if i still had oem blades. luckily working at a parts store let me test a half dozen styles of blades. trico# 25-220 and 25-200 are what id recommend

 

I was going to buy the Trico blades but they are right up in price with the Bosch Icon blades which I like so I went with the Bosch...

 

in my testing order of preference would be trico force, bosche evolution, anco countour, oem hybrid. i didnt mess with anything thing but the best contour blades, dont carry rainx to compare to but the bosch is a good blade for sure and less than half the price of the trico forces because we are clearing out bosch products. my biggest issue is something to do with the contour of the windshield and the way it would pull water back on the windshield halfway up the drivers side edge when the blade was returning to bottom position. small nuance but annoying none the less

 

I've driven my 2016 Taco in a lot of rain, so I've gotten pretty accustomed to how the wipers work (or don't). Today I drove my wife's twenty year old VW with 2 year old Bosch blades about 100 miles of heavily trafficked freeway, in moderate rain and was amazed at how much clearer the windshield stayed. It's motivated me to try Glass Wax or another cleaner, plus maybe switch to Trico or Bosch blades. The VW visibility just made the drive feel much safer, especially with the heavy truck spray.

 

regular old turtle wax https://www.turtlewax.com/our-products/essentials/turtle-wax-super-hard-shell-paste-wax works good to reduce wiper chatter and improve visibility. Fallow the standard instructions, but sprinkle water on yor window as you wipe the wax off and then buff with a micro fiber cloth. You'll be surprised how much dirt comes out of a clean window.

 

Mothers makes a spray wax for the whole vehicle , works great on glass, better than rain x

 

hi OP. I have been having the same issue as you. did you end up resolving it in any particular way?

 

Since I live in Florida and we get lots of rain I use lots of Rain-X and my wipers are Bosch Icon. I use Bosch Icon on our entire fleet lol.

 

Like @shakerhood said, use a washer fluid that has Rainx in it. Applying Rainx by itself is useless, as it goes away too fast. You can also get it in washer additive form:

I have been using it this way for about 15yrs? I buy any cheap washer fluid and add 4oz of the Rainx additive, unless I see the Rainx gallons on sale for the same price. $4 or $5 for a bottle of additive is a good price.


Also, pop off your wiper blades and use alcohol and a cloth to clean off any existing build up.


With that here, I rarely need to use anything but the slowest intermittent setting.

 

It sounds like you went through a car wash that sprays wax on the car. You just need to remove the wax. I like the OEM blade inserts. Two years in and mine are still streak-free, but I have a ceramic coating on the glass. Start with new blade inserts from the dealer for less than the cost of new ones. Then, clean the glass with one of the methods mentioned above and keep a coat of Rain-X on there and you should be good. This is coming from a lifelong Washingtonian who's used to driving in the rain, good wipers matter to me lol. Would NOT recommend the Bosch or any of the single-beam blades. Don't know what it is about them, whether it's the rubber or the weird tension from them but every vehicle I've been in with those blades has windshield glass that's scratched like hell. Yeah they don't streak but at that cost, I'd say no thanks.

 

I had O'Reilly's put a set of Trico Force on my '19 Tacoma this morning. They seem to work better than the Bosch Icons. Hope they last a couple years. I don't drive but around 3,000 miles a year so I don't see why they wouldn't last.

 

Don't waste your time with Rain-X. It lasts maybe two rain storms, and with the washer fluid you're just pissing it down the drain.
Apply Aquapel. It requires more elbow grease but actually lasts.

For some reason Bosch doesn't list Tacoma as a fitment for Icons. I tried to wing it with the correct length and bias (A driver, B passenger), but in the end they chattered so damn much I just went back to the OEM ones. Pity, they worked great on my WRX. Honestly the OEM ones aren't bad, so the only real downside I see compared to beam-type is the potential for ice buildup.
