So far third genereation seems to be doing well from a reliability standpoint. I see one power steering issue, but not much else. I go and look at the Colorado forum, and lots of issues. I actually like the features and fit of the colorado more, but my number one factor for buying vehicle is reliability. I know it is early, and I shouldn't be surprised as my 2008 tacoma has zero issues with over 105000 miles on it. Can't even find a smidge of oil anywhere on the garage floor or engine compartment. Probably jinxing myself by saying this. I have yet to replace the serpentine belt as well...but will soon if I don't snag a new vehicle soon. Belt still looks good though.

Currently debating between 4runner, tacoma or tundra. Only thing that shies me away from another Tacoma is the first year of new generation thing...and that fact that I can't fit with that damn moonroof (same with 4runner moonroof though).

Good to know. I only buy vehicles that are proven to be reliable after two months.

    Arailt,

I just thought it was somewhat reassuring that this Tacoma forum isn't looking like the colorado forum and all the issues I'm reading about. Will take years before we know how this Tacoma stacks up. Carcomplaints.com is pretty interesting site to follow.

I joined this forum for the reason to see if theres any big problems. I'm waiting till the end of 2016 to get one, or possibly get a 2017. Want to make sure there are no big problems with them. And at the end of the eyar they might not have many options avaialbe anymore and I have a specific one I want. I've made mistakes in the past getting a car that didn't have all the features I wanted since it was all they had on the lot, and then regretted it. Ended up doing a lot of the changes myself, and that added up quick. Wanting navi didn't just require changing the head unit, also had to change the can gateway module. wanted LED tails, had to do that and do a bunch of coding for it.

    Never making that mistake again.

Yeah, at this point I debate between getting the tacoma sport without moonroof or the sr5 4 runner without moonroof. Would then have to add heated leather seats to either (1800$) and upgrade speakers, add amp for nice stereo (1000-1500$). Although after listening to new JBL with sound cranked up in 4 runner and Tundra....would need to update sound system regardless. Way weaker than my stock JBL system in 2008 Tacoma. How did the sound power/quality get weaker over the years and not better?

Most of the people on here now are Tacoma enthusiast. In a few months to a year and thereafter. You will get a lot of people coming on here with legit issues n you would think it's a huge problem but most of the time. They represent a small percentage of overall all Tacoma owners in the us. Or atleast we hope..

Every new model / redesign goes through growing pains from any manufacture, unavoidable. Again, why we have warranty. I just couldn't do the GM product myself because the resale value on a Taco has far out weighed any other mid size truck on the market for a long time. My experience has been about 3 years is when you seen any really changes made at a production level. All you really get in the 2nd year is better dealer support as the technicians learn and report the issues along with fixes to the factory. So what may seem better 2nd year realizability is like more from better technician support because it's no big deal at that point. Right now a fluid leak here or there is the first anyone has ever seen. Much like if the manufacturing line because more in tune and slight improvements are made based on the reports back from the field.

We are beta testers but we do have the luxury of our friends seeing we are playing the new game before most can or do.

Are not half of these linked already dealt with?

Oil light comes on when a vehicle stalls purely because power is on but no oil is moving, wasn't repeatable. USB not charging was a bad cable not a truck issue. Media restarting was an update for the head unit which is basically software.

The CEL / Trac is suspected injector fault, steering rack leak and head job is about the only ones I saw where "faults". The pitched tone, that one is a good follow but mixed responses.

I guess my point is that so far everything I have read, again just my opinion, are fixable and not some mass issue you will find across every truck, so far.

I only see the odd thing here or there. I wouldn't say it's a bad scenario so far. Crappy for the guy who had a steering rack leak and gasket repair but that's just new parts settling, again how I see things.

I have lurked on coloradofans.com and notice a substancial amount of mechanical problems as thread subjects. I know the 3rd gen is still fresh but I lurked right after the Colorado/Canyon launch too and there were seemingly a lot more problems showing up compared to the Tacoma. Toyota has always left much to be desired as far as powertrain options go, but reliability is usually much better than the domestics.

I agree with OP, 3rd gens are very reliable vehicles. Here's a pic of my 3rd gen 4runner at 175,000 miles. Just did the timing belt last week:

I don't understand what you're comparing.... the new Colorado and Canyon came out in 2015. A full year ahead of the 3rd gen tacoma. Yea....so, it's a no brainer they're ahead of Toyota in the 'growing pains'.

The tacoma has already seen its share of growing pains and they've only been out ONE MONTH!!

Let's see what happens several years in.....

When the 2nd gens first hit the lot I bought one immediately without even batting an eye. Why....because it's a Tacoma and I LOVED my first gen Taco. Is any vehicle perfect?...no. They are designed, manufactured and assembled by humans. Like humans, machines are not perfect either. But at the end of the day GM, Ford or any other maker cannot come close to the reliability and quality that Toyota produces. Of course this logic is only important to someone who wants to keep their truck for say 4 or more years ....especially if you plan on owning a machine for 10 to 20 years. When I bought a new release gen 2 everyone on the forums were skeptical and critical of the 4.0. They were critical of the new body style. They said the new gen2 will not be reliable. That 2005 TRD sport still sits in my garage today and I have towed a 5000lb camper all over the US with it. Has it ever seen a repair bay? NEVER! Has it ever left me stranded? NEVER. I had a 3 year old S10 that had more problems than Syria. This is why I immediately bought the Gen3 when they hit the lots and didn't even think twice. I learned a hard lesson with GM and I'm not going to get Rammed in the butt again by Chrysler.

LMFAO at people in Oct 2015 talking about how reliable the 3rd gen was/is.

Did you guys have a day's worth of data to back that up?
