I know, first time use.. My traction boards already paid for themselves during one icy evening.

So carry a safe jack to lift the frame and also carry a hi lift to use as a poor man's winch?

I tried going to this site at work, and "safejacks.com" is blocked for being an adult-oriented proxy. Hmm. I wonder why?

I was actually wondering about this.. could I use a Hi-lift on my trailer hitch receiver? Put it in the square, jack up, put in blocks, and then do what I needed?

It is stated MANY MANY times in the Hi-lift documentation not to work on the truck while it's being lifted by the Hi-lift. Only work on it once you've put blocks or jackstands under the vehicle and removed the weight from the Hi-Lift.

That *should* be common sense, but unfortunately probably isn't.

Plus you'll have to lift up the back end pretty far to get the front end on jack stands... :D

I mean it's been done the other way round... Gets a bit tricky putting it back down right side up though.

I don't know if I would do that. The hitch is right in the center, and once jacked up, the truck could shift left or right and fall off the hi-lift. Too risky for me IMO. I'd rather carry a bottle jack and a piece of wood with it. Then you can jack under the axle or the LCA, which'll be enough to change a tire. The hi-lift would still be handy in other scenarios though. With a wheel attachment, you could use to break suction before getting recovered from some thick mud. Or if you're high centered, jack it up and maybe put something under the tires.

The only time I've ever used my Hi-Lift in the receiver was to support the truck with jack stands under the frame rails with the leafs dropped off. When I let the truck down on them it seems to want to droop pretty far and I didn't want it bending the frame or something. I would never trust a Hi-Lift in the receiver alone for the reason you mention, just not stable. They can be handy devices but need to be treated with a lot of respect. Personally the idea of that Safe Jack thing along with a winch would really eliminate the Hi-Lift for most things IMHO.

Use a come along instead of the hi-lift, it's actually designed to be a poor man's winch.

Probably doesn't look as cool mounted in the bed as a hi lift does but it works so much better. ;)

Plus when you have a 48" hi-lift and your straps stretch 36" as you put them under tension you get quite a workout... :)

High Lift jacks have a way of letting you know when your doing something wrong. Either it will scare the shit out of you or slap you upside the head. One sure thing to remember, when you jack up the back end the parking brake isn't going to save your ass.

I use my high lift for fencing actually, almost never use it to lift the truck. I have a floor jack in the truck bedbox for that.
