I have been checking my oil once a week since I bought it in early October 2016. I have never seen oil turn as gunky in 3k miles so I went and changed it today. It helped that the temp was about 60. I don't what kind of oil was in the truck but the truck was maintained by Larry Miller on Eubank here in Abq. It must have been some kind of cheap ass dino oil. I put in Mobil 1, 5w-30 and I'm glad I did.

Who says it's only been 3k miles since the last change?

How many total miles on the vehicle?

    Which engine?

I guess my question should have been clearer.

You said this was your first change. You bought the truck in October. So you've driven it 3476 since purchase, correct?

You must have been told the oil had been changed right when you purchased it or you could not have come up with that number, correct?

Thus the question, how do you know the oil is only 3k used? IE what if it 'wasn't' a fresh change when you bought it? Just still looked good?

    Just something to consider.

At the low mileage you are at it's not life threatening. And even cheap dino oils nowadays, with SN ratings, are almost as good as synthetics of 10-15 years ago. Lab tests show that dark oil is not always an indicator of lifeless oil............

True enough. I am sending a sample to blackstone and have them figure out what it is and why it's bad looking.
I don't trust stealerships at all so nothing much surprises me. Sorry if I ranted a bit.
I paid big bucks for this truck and I want it to last. My 97 4runner had 250k on it and no problems other than the paint (toyota pox) and a cracked
windshield tank. Mobil 1 5w-30 for most of those 250k
