Headers are going back to Hedman tomorrow to get re-coated. Should take about 3 weeks.

Airstream update. All wiring is in the walls. Still have to wire the switches and power panel, but that will be after they get the spray foam done. So far, 600ft of wire for the interior components. Looks weird having a Ram infront of the trailer rather than my Tacoma. After this next round of rain comes through and I get a few days of clear weather, I'm going to figure out the battery layout. Probably going to go on the curb side behind the wheel well. That way they offset the weight of the toilet/water heater/power panel.

Worked on my oil pan a little bit. I am extending my pan by adding a second sump section. I cut the back off the second sump when I cut it off the other pan. I am going to cut some holes in the front of the pan that's mounted to my motor and use some door hinges to make baffle doors. The door will stay open during cruise and acceleration but will close during braking. This will increase the capacity of my oil pan while also keeping oil at the pickup tube instead of sloshing into the front section during braking. That way, I will have less threat of oil starvation during hard acceleration or hard braking.
I have to patch a hole where the previous owner of the second pan brazed a bung onto the side. I will also be moving the dipstick from the rear section (Milodon installed location) to the front sump, allowing the dipstick tube to clear my headers. Depending on how the pan turns out when the sump is welded on, and how my headers clear, I may be able to use the stock dipstick location which would put the dipstick 1/2" behind the front panel of the added sump.

    Good updates. Much appreciated.

I got lots of projects going at the same time, too.

I can either work on my boat or go fishing. I love both.IMG_20170115_094209.jpg

It's going to get rediculous when I start actually working on my property. Then it will be 5 projects that all want money at the same time.
Unfortunately, I spent a lot of my childhood in Key West. Now, I can't stand fresh water fishing.

I force myself to slum it.

I have a tarpon fish planned for May. I hear you on being spoiled on salt water fishing.

Nice. I've only been tarpon fishing once. I preferred going after snapper and grunt. Occasionally I'd go after barracuda for the fight, though I did have one stalking me when I was diving for lobster.

Not entirely happy with Hedman. Sent my new headers back because they weren't completely coated. Got another set delivered to me and they also have bare steel on the pipes and the star weld.

Nice. I haven't gotten far, but I'll answer any questions I have the answer to.

This is pretty much spot on with how I envisioned the crossmember.

Worked on the Airstream a bit. Built a chimney for the fridge. It'll be completely sealed inside a cabinet with fresh air flowing from below the fridge and up the back to the original roof vent. Still have to build a couple more brackets and install a buttload of rivets. But I have to pull the sides and the front panel off to clean and bleach them. Used the original inner skin to make the parts, so there is a lot of staining and some mold that has to get cleaned off before I finalize it with sealant/rivets/aluminum tape.

    I hear you.

I actually put the boat project on the back burner until later. The money I need to spend for a decent coating on the inside is better spent having some fun now the weather is changing for the better.

Yeah. My monthly car funds are going toward a down payment for a new travel trailer and the $3k in permits I need to start building my "private RV park". Car is sitting on stands and the motor is in its cradle (gets turned and primed, but havent run it since dyno).

Made the dipstick mount today. Used some thick wall pipe, threaded one end, drilled a hole in the side of the pan, inserted tube and used a wrecker bar to wrench it into place. That kept the two pieces tight to each other for welding. It'll get hit with the tig on Thursday.

Working in my oil pan today. Got the dipstick mount/tube welded on. Now I am sandblasting it inside and out. Outside was relatively easy considering the dang thing takes up almost my entire cabinet and had some PITA areas to reach.
The inside is another story. The reason for sandblasting the inside is to remove the carbon from welding. Worked a half hour (15 min work, 30 min break to let the compressor rest a bit) on the inside and have about 90% of the carbon gone. I am fighting it to get the area around the dipstick since I am working through a tight space.
When I'm done, I'll spend a good amount of time cleaning it out then the outside will get painted in POR15.

    Cool!

Is the pan aluminum or iron?

    MIG welded or TIG?

I've had a hard time making vessels out of iron that was MIG welded. Seems like i always have an oil stain on one of the seems after a couple months. TIG seems to be more reliable, but I don't do enough of it anymore to keep my skills up.

The pan is steel. The extension and patch are mig, the dip stick tube is tig to the pan.
Finished up sandblasting and cleaning. 4x cleaning with hot water, dawn, and an assortment of brushes. It is now in the oven at 175 for 30 minutes to dry it out.
