My wife's Mercedes C300 nav system does not allow me or a passenger to enter a new destination manually into the navigation system when the car is moving. I find that annoying. I can select addresses I have previously saved, just not a new one.

With the 3rd Generation Tacoma TRD OR, how does that work? For example: I want to go to my friend's house, an address that is NOT in the "saved" addresses. Can my passenger manually enter the address into the navigation system? And/or can I verbally (attempt) to enter the address? I say "attempt" as most times our Mercedes C300 nav system gets really inventive with what we say....

I have seen on forums where I cannot manually add a destination, but I have also read where I COULD- hoping for clarification!

Not a big deal, just curious.......BTW, I do not currently own a Tacoma....trying to decide if the navigation system might replace my Garmin GPS.

Nope, not unless you put a switch into the vehicle speed signal wire. Do a search on reverse camera mod and you'll see some discussion. @jshsltr sells a 28pin harness that you can use to let you do this mod without cutting the factory wires.

You might be able to verbally enter an address, I haven't tried.

Do you need to know, or care?
Yes to verbally, no to manually.

Thanks to you both. I was afraid of that. Our Mercedes is the same, and nearly impossible to verbally enter an entire address without it interpreting it in sometimes laughable ways!

    ME: Find address.
    Nav: Please state the address
ME: 123 Hornswallow Ln, Goleta, California
Nav: Did you say 23 Swashbuckler's Cove, Palm Beach, Florida?

Frustrating! However, Mercedes MBrace, which is the cell phone ap that links to our car, allows us to easily send an address to the car, along with other useful functions (remote start, locating the car <useful if someone borrowed it>, and a couple of the usual POI searches). HOWEVER, my passenger once tried to trick our navigation by sending an address using MBrace while in the car, driving, but the system refuses to do that since the car is in motion! I believe I will retain my trusty Garmin in any vehicle I buy, even if that vehicle has a built in navigation system. If it cannot be updated while driving it's nearly worthless. I understand the safety concerns and liability, but why not simply detect if there is a passenger, then allow the input while driving?

It is frustrating for sure especially since the truck is all setup to detect a front seat passenger. I believe you can modify the truck (snip wire and add a switch) to defeat this interlock if it is bothersome enough.

It is interesting that MB does this too; I did not know that. BMW and Porsche let you do whatever you want.

Voice command is one way, and I agree it doesn't seem to listen to me. I have also used the app to add an address. Basicly if you plug in the addy on the phone app, then add it to saved locations , which you can access while moving.

If navigation system is a high priority, it would not be a reason to buy the Tacoma.

No they don't. Not unless they've changed it since the CIC systems.

I think you are correct. I swear we could do it in our 2014 X5 35d but I just asked the wife (it is her car) and she thinks it will only do presets/previous/search for POI/and voice entry (no manual entry of address). I'll have to try it next time we are in her car.

No. Because the manual input won't work when driving and the voice commands will have you road raging.

    Here's an $18 option. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/28-pin-head-unit-wiring-harness-adapter.458293/

I suspect you can buy your own switch and run wires to it for much less than the $132 difference.

(if you really need a no-drill stick-on switch, see this PIAA unit: https://www.amazon.com/PIAA-74034-Switch-Powersport-Harness/dp/B003D5E8DY )

It works exactly as advertised! I had one in my Sienna for years, never a problem.

Interesting......I will have to do more research on the "addy" on the phone. What is the full name of that phone app?
Does that app allow you to find a location on your phone, then transfer it to the truck's nav system? And could a passenger do that while the truck is moving.

Oh, the nav system is not a high priority, but I would probably not go for a trim level that didn't have what seems to be the basic radio....seems like every SR5 and above has navigation in it. Totally different from the GM where it's a $1000 upgrade (have to get Bose radio with the GPS).

its the toyota Entune app suite, you find the destination in the app, click on saved, it goes to the saved destinations app in the suite. I know when i first get in and my phone connects it will up date saved destinations, but not sure while traveling.

Thanks. That sounds exactly like the Mercedes MBrace app, but I know THAT won't send any data when you're driving. I believe it's set up to only receive the new destinations when the car starts each time. I can live with it, but it would be nice if the passenger could manually enter data as needed. I maybe wrong, but it seems like as the built-in nav systems work that way. Another reason to hang onto my Garmin 2597 with life time maps!

or you know buy a $100 garmin unit with free lifetime map updates and you kill 3 birds with 1 stone.

    1. save $50 from beatsonic and save on install $$$ and time
    2. don't have to pay to update the maps in the head unit from toyota
    3. you can what ever you want with a garmin while driving

not like you use the nav all the time. just like you don't use the built in nav all the time :)

mine just stays in the center console unless I really need it. in a quick pinch I use my phone.
