I believe the only way to truly determine the necessity of the brackets or an affect on crumple zones would be to do stress and crash tests. And I am fairly confident it would vary between the three designs. But I certainly don't want to volunteer my truck for this type of test though. :)

I'm having a hard time deciding between US and SSO. I don't to cut my bumper but damn that SSO looks good and damn near OEM looking.

Thanks for the thread. I've been having the same struggle.

Don't you gotta cut the bumper for the fairlead on the US?
It's a bitter pill, and there's no going back, but no ragrets on this end with the SSO.

Maybe you were trying to say that 1/4" is 33% thinner than 3/8"?

    Way to much...but not enough.
Just pulled the trigger on a @SouthernStyleOffRoad slimline! Can't beat the look and function. Can't wait to get it.

What did you use to cut your bumper?

Dremel with rip saw blade but a plastic cutting disk will work. The plastic is super thin so the blade will cause slight melting but nothing that affects the bumper.

Note that Dremel doesn't make a true ripsaw blade. They make a wierd attachment for them (for a ripsaw) so I recommend you buy an aftermarket ripsaw blade or buy a dremel plastic cutting disk.

Big +1 there. I get compliments all the time on the SSO bumper.

I was planning on using a dremel for mine too. But before that, I might try to use this small jigsaw I have. It came with a PVC bit and is light weight. Worth a shot since I have a fairly steady hand. I've used it on kayaks a few times before with good result.
