I have built out a little bed (storage under bed with access panels through the top) and some shelving units in the back. As well as a surfboard rack. It holds 3 boards up to 6'7".

The orange and red clearance lights come standard on the bel-air shells. They are activated when the lights are turned on. They wire it up to your battery with a fuse upon install. This one also came with some interior lights in the front and back. I'll dig up what pics I can.

It's taken me a few iterations of design to get it to this stage. Some things work and some don't. All depends on your needs.

About flex: you do not want the shell to resist box flex... You want to have a shell capable of flexing with the box and not breaking.

Not much on mods - Leer 180, TRD wheels, Mobtown sliders, rear hitch, helper springs on the rear
That second photo with the bicycle stowed on the right side is the money shot. Most definitely a nice set up!

I too have are mx. Love it so far. I built a platform from plywood and 2x8s off the cutouts designed for them in the bed. I am 6ft and can sit up without feeling too cramped in the back when I remove the platform from half of the bed. I think it adds an extra 5 inches if I remember correctly

Salladh, that's an awesome setup, thanks a ton for posting the photos. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Bel-Air, my biggest concern is weight and drag since I have a 2010 2.7L 4cyl. Do you have any idea how much your Bel-Air weighs? And how did the drag affect your mileage? I was thinking of going bigger, been living out of my cab-high fiberglass shell for 2 years and so tired of crawling around. Like I said though, wondering how my 4 banger would handle the drag and weight.. They have some cab-over ones that look really nice.

    Thanks,
    Brian

If I had to do it over again I would begin with an aluminum work shell from Tradesman. You can custom order to your liking and they have a lot of options.
I would do something like the following but with a gradual increase in height after the cab instead of 90 degrees.

Thats a pretty awesome setup you have there in your Bel Air, however your surfer-mobile documentary here on TW would not be complete without a picture of you catching some surf on a BIG WAVE, u got a pic of you hitting the water after emerging from a long snooze snoring in the back of your surfer mobile only to emerge at dawn to catch the surf ?

My current camper, a Four Wheel Camper Finch, cost much more than a Tradesman cap and it was used.
Pros and cons for any set up.
