I'm considering starting a new build for a 4x4 expo long travel style rig. I'm planning on adding the suspension and changing out body panels for fiberglass so all I really need is a clean interior and a strong running drivetrain. I figured a 3.4 5 speed is a good truck to start with. The less I spend on the truck is the more I can spend on upgrades, but I don't want to start the build with dealing with maintenance issues. Is this worth it for the starting point? They say 3.5 motor but I'm assuming they mean the 3.4. Any feedback?

He means 3.4 and if i were you i would check it out in person and see how many miles it has on it etc if it is as good as he says it is then its a good deal but there could be problems that he has not listed.

Yeah I think it's gonna have to wait until I see the right one - if I wait I'm sure the right one will come my way. Thank you for the good advice!

That's a lot of miles. I would steer clear. If overlanding, the last thing you want is an engine failure in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah there's a lot of first gens with rebuilt engines out here. About 2/5 have paperwork to prove it. Still trying to decide if I want to go with one of those. I agree with what you said 100%. I don't even want to deal with that kind of issue at home lol

I actually went and checked that truck out. It drove like crap ran like crap and had a valve tick that the owner couldn't hear for some reason.

The two things that bother me more than anything else when buying and selling things: lowballers (especially ones that act like you owe them whatever you're selling for the price they give), and people that say "it's a cheap fix," "it's just a minor issue," or "I could be selling it for more," when it's obviously not the case - looks like I have one to add to the list "no, I don't hear that." lol!

Everything is always a "cheap fix" when it's a vehicle your buying on Craigslist, but it was comical because you could tell that he heard it haha he just would lie and say he said nothing
