Interesting. I just so happen to store towels in both door bins.
I like the weight on the flap, but doing the foam from underneath is so easy to try.
I bet some rubberized undercoating in the right spots underneath the truck would help too.
I can easily live with mine, the way it is now. (auto transmission excluded!)

I might try this tomorrow. If I do, I'll have to go grab some foam from lowes or home depot so I can get a Db reading with my phone before..and after.

Question to anyone who has placed the 3" foam on the back vents...Have you had any difficulty closing the doors?

Can you post some before and after photos of the tape job so I now where and what hole you are covering up please?

I couldn't find any foam at the Home Depot or Lowe's so I need to look at an upholstery shop now. Where are you guys finding the foam to place on the outside of the vents???

Upholstery, fabric or hobby shop (e.g. Michaels) should have is but I would drive around to the back dumpster and peer inside before going in the store. Even if I went in the store I would ask if they have any scraps they want to get rid of.

I've even seen the stuff at Walmart but you have to buy a big roll - either in the bedding section or the fabric section.

Maybe a crafts shop or a sewing shop where they sell pillow making supplies.
There is a post on the 'howling' noise on this site, with pictures (there is a link in the post above)
And it's 2 inch foam that I used, not three, although 3 would probably work.

I think a pool noodle might be too dense. You want foam that you can almost breathe through, so it will vent a little if it has to.

I picked up some 3" thick foam from a local upholstery shop and they just gave me a old used large piece. I cut it into several 4 x 12 pieces and crammed it in from the bottom using an adjustable mop handle. This turned out to be a pain in the ass and I had difficulty moving it into the correct spot and shape. It became lodged in places that were not exactly perfect. The angles are difficult and there are many things blocking direct access to the vents.

I decided to add the last two pieces of foam over the vents from the top. I pushed them down with my fingers to get them started and used a plastic clipboard the push them down into place. This turned out to be the easiest way to center them directly over the vents. The clipboard ins thin, wide and long enough to push it down evenly.

My initial impression is that the foam appears to have taken a little of the high tone sound away from the all ready loud TRP PRO exhaust note. I still hear plenty of road noise and according to the DB app on my iPhone the decibels seem to be averaging 76DB's around 60-70mph. I expected the DB's to drop noticeably and they didn't. Next time I hit the high way and cruise at 70 I will collect another DB's reading.

I may take my truck to a local car stereo store and get a quote for sound deadening material installation on the back cab wall behind the seats. I am not sure if this will cut down on the exterior road noise as much as helping with stereo and base quality. I am hopping they may have some advice and may suggest adding insulation behind the seats or something. I pulled back the carpet in the far corners of our trucks and there appears to be zero insulation under the carpet. My last BMW had like 2" of insulation under the carpet so it appears that Toyota has really cut corners relative to sound reduction. Disappointing considering how much these trucks cost.

    They cut corners, for sure.
Did you cover the holes in the lower control arms? Just tape them over - Im curious as to the DB change
    from that.
    thx

I havent had any issues on long road trips yet, but I would be interested to see if I notice a difference when the foam is added. Going to try this out this weekend.

I soundproofed my truck a few years back - doors, floor, roof and the rear wall of the cab using the techniques / materials listed on https://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com. I also placed extra weatherstipping along the doors and glued down the existing weatherstripping along the entire line.

I used a professional sound meter (3M/Quest Technologies Sound Meter) to test my truck before and after the sound deadening. Took the truck out on the same road under the same wind, temperature, and speed conditions (max speed of 100 km/hr) and the sound meter was placed in the exact same place on the seat for both tests. Before the sound deadening the device peak measurement was 76.4 DB and averaged at 76 DB, after the sound deadening the peak DB was 72.6 and averaged at 72.0.

This is not a huge change in DB numerically but to the human ear it''s very noticeable. The main noise I notice now is tire noise and wind noise from the mirrors. The number of creaks and squeaks is next to none aside from when you go over large expansion lines / potholes in the road. My wife's new Volvo makes more creaks and squeaks than my truck (though overall it's quieter than my Tacoma due to less tire and wind noise). Same goes with a friends Audi - it's a lot louder inside than my Tacoma.

As a side note - I compared the values between the 3M/Quest Technologies Sound Meter and the values produced on a sound app on my android phone and they came out to be almost exactly the same.

2 inch foam not 3 inch will make it easier. Cover the lower control arm holes too.
