This isn't actually about my Tacoma but it was involved.
A buddy of mine slid into a snow bank on a driveway incline that was all compact snow and ice. The car was a ford mustang I'd say somewhere between 96-2002 rear wheel drive spinning tires and the snow bank was way too hard to dig out. The only way he was getting out was if I pulled him sideways and spin him so he could reverse out.
I tied a strap around the rear drivers axle and gave him a bigger yank than I anticipated and now his abs light is on.
I'm no mechanic but I assume I damaged the break line? I heard through a second friend that the mustang owner said he could "feel where I pulled him" while driving I assume I bent an axle?

    What do you think? :(:fingerscrossed:

There are brake lines that run down the axle housing. Did you pinch one of those?

You helped him out that's that. Next time keep on driving or let him tie the recovery strap.
You shouldn't be liable for helping him out.

His problem. He didn't have to take your help, he could have paid someone to come out and pull him out of the snow bank. Tell him sorry about your problems next time think twice before driving your rwd sports car in a snow storm

Just like the Taco, there are brake lines and wheel speed sensor wires running along the axle tube. Could be either. A good scanner can read the ABS codes. Probably pinched a wire. i don't think a damaged brake line will set a code.

Check brake fluid first. Some cars have sensors for low fluid level that set off abs light. Then check wiring if It even has it at each wheel it might be only 1 sensor on top of differential in which case I doubt that's it.

If all else fails try tapping on it.

    Reserected from the dead.
It's the wire feeding the wheel sensor. Just repair it and move on.

For all you know, it was from where he hit the bank. Let him deal with it.

Maybe it's just me, but the Mustang has to be the worst vehicle in snow and ice. I know, all RWD's suck in the snow, but whenever I'm driving in winter conditions, there's always a Mustang around and it's always stuck!

if its pulling that direction,, could have kinked a brake line, not allowing the brakes to release, causing the pull that direction, I have an old Camaro that happened to. Had a pinched line and the brakes wouldn't release

Next time do yourself a favor and have the owner of the stuck car hook up the strap. That way if something goes bad it's on them. I pulled a Civic out of a ditch several years back with my 4Runner. It took 2 attempts because he somehow how hooked it to his bumper cover, which ripped off the car when I tried to pull him out the 1st time.

When you do things the redneck way you are going to run into problems (sometimes). Have him take it to a mechanic and have the issue figured out.

This. Though it's worthwhile to double-check his work. Don't want a piece flying off and hitting your own windshield.

That isn't always a good solution either.
Problem is that if the dingbat hooks it onto something that isn't secure, it could pop off and throw something violently at YOU.

Best bet is let them hook it on, and then YOU INSPECT IT. If its idiotic, make them fix it until it satisfies BOTH of you.

Or, just leave the POS in the ditch.
