Am I a terrible negotiator, or are dealers telling the truth when they say their used Tacomas are priced super aggressively? This week I've had several dealers say they can't knock off any more than a few hundred, if that. Anyone have any luck and care to share secrets? Or is bargaining a Tacoma just not gonna happen?

For instance, I've been looking at two Toyota-certified 2014 TRD Sport 4x4 Doublecabs, one with 40k for $27k and one with 60k for $25k. The 40k truck was immaculate, and I offered $24k. The 60k truck was less than immaculate but still in excellent condition. We were trying to get him to accept $23k. Am I off base?

really depends what trucks are going for in your area. On the one you offered $24k, did they counter offer or just say no?

When I bought mine a couple years ago, the salesman said they have less leeway with used Tacomas.
This is my first vehicle purchase so I'm no negotiator but I got him down to below MSRP for my new (at the time) base model.

Price sounds about right, thing is, if u dont buy it for 25, the next guy will happily pay that much for it.

Best place to negotiate may be interest rate

I paid $30K on a stickered $34K 2014 DCSB 4x4 TRD OR mid May 2016 and felt comfortable with that price. 25K on the odometer

Didn't shop at a Toyota dealer tho, because apparently I look poor or something because they won't talk to me seriously about purchases

Kinda depends on where you are. Shop around on line to get some good ideas of prices elsewhere. Always good to have a baseline of what the trucks are going for. Also check other local dealers websites.

I bought a 2013 last year they wouldn't budge on the price one dollar, but it was clean with CARFAX and I wanted it, most used trucks I looked at were dented and looked like regular maintainence probably wasn't up to date, the truck I bought was a Repo that was bought at auction by the dealer with 49k, it was used as a commercial work truck.

If you are close to OK with price ask dealer to include Toyota VSC ( vehicle service contract ) out to 7 or 8 years and 100,000 + miles. May make it sound better for you and minimal cost to dealer. I don't know much about resale of used tacomas but everything I have read here seems to talk about great resale. Never be ashamed to negotiate but do your homework first and be reasonable, it is actually a good learning experience IMO. You can always walk away but if asking price is fair you may lose out. Sometimes it just comes down to how bad do you want it and how much are you willing to pay. Good luck!

Go to a site such as www.kbb.com and plug in the info for your area and the specific trucks you're interested in. You'll get a good idea what a fair price is in your area.

The same shit everyone else has.
Theses trucks hold their value well, especially if its something desirable (read TRD Sport/Off Road). As stated above, see if theyll work with you on an additional warranty/interest rates.

I just bought a 2013 Tacoma with 32,000 miles from a dealer that doesn't negotiate. They advertise that their very best price is on the sticker. So I did a little homework, mostly trusting KBB. It gave me a range of $25K to $27K. They were asking $25,700 so I bought it. Negotiated slightly on my trade-in though.

It's always so hard to tell if you got a good deal or not. The best thing is to do a little homework, see what they're selling for in your area, and at least you won't be going in blind. These are the sites I used:

    https://www.cargurus.com/
    https://www.cars.com/
    https://www.kbb.com/

I also checked a car history report to be sure there wasn't a red flag.

If you're able to go through your own private Credit Union, etc. Salesmen don't know a thing about the truck on the lot, BUT they'll sure tell you what a sweet ride and great price their giving you! And remember their next question " Mr. Buyer , how much are looking to spend or what kind of monthly payments are you looking for?" DON"T answer his crap , Tell him you'll be paying cash, and get your loan from a Credit Union or your own bank if possible.... They'll come down on the price when they know a lump sum is coming and it's a straight up sale. Seen my sister trade her preowned Ford Explorer to local dealer, he marked the freaking price up 6-7K more than what he allowed her and basically lied by placing "ONE OWNER" on the front windshield, and she had bought it used!! If the buyer requests a CARFAX , it'll bust his ass. Anyway , enough of my RANT..... Just remember they'll ask you what kind of payments are you looking for and of course it'll be $40-$60 more than that and he'll brag and beg you to test drive his BEST vehicle in town, that he doesn't know a thing about, usually comes in from an auction...... Checkered coat, Gold Ring wearing Buzzards....LOL And remember if you have a trade in, it's not worth a thing - until they put it on their lot!! LOL... Good Luck and being serious, I would contact my personal credit union or bank and see the loan value, Tell the salesman you're looking at Tacoma's, no hurry but will be out right buying....He'll give you a number and you'll work him down from there.. Then if you borrow the loan value, buy the truck for 2-4K less, there's your first MOD $$$$

The dealer I purchased my used 2013 from tried to sell me a service contract for $2,000 (7 yrs, 100,000 miles). I asked my regular mechanic about that. When I told him it was a Tacoma with 32K miles, he said you're gonna drive it another 100,000 miles before you'll need anything that's covered in the contract, so don't buy it.

I agree with your comment about doing your homework, and being reasonable. Whether you're a good negotiator or not, at least you're going into it with info. If I were to somehow find out that I got screwed out of say $1000, I wouldn't really mind that, knowing that I got a good truck.

This is my 3rd Toyota, and my overall impression is that these things drive a long time. So I expect resale value to be good.

This was my experience last year January through March at new car dealer lots. I was looking for a Gen 2 DCLB 4x4 which are hard to find used in my area. All the prices I list, unless I state OTD, are before taxes/title/license which add another ~10% in my area. I sold my vehicle private party so the dealer made no profit on that end of the transaction. I passed on the extended warranty and vehicle maintenance contract and car alarm that the finance guy tried to push.

Dealer 1: 2015 SR5 4x4, 7k miles, asking $35.5K, would not go below $32.5K. My offer was $32.5K OTD. The truck had been into the shop four times for maintenance/warranty work. I passed. That truck sat on their lot for two months and they never called me. I guess my offer was too low.

Dealer 2: 2014 SR5 4x4, 30k miles, asking $34K, would not go below $31K. The passenger side had a run-in with some tree branches and the tailgate had seen better days. I offered $33K OTD, they countered $34K OTD. I walked thinking they would call back and meet in the middle. They didn't and not being in love with the scratches and dents I passed. That truck sat on their lot for three months after I passed and they never called. I guess $34K OTD was really their limit.

Dealer 3: 2014 Limited 4x4, 16K miles, asking $35K. I paid slightly less than middle of the KBB dealer range and felt I got a fair deal.

Dealer 4: One month after I bought from Dealer 3, Dealer 4 had a 2013 Sport 4x4 with 30K miles, $32K. I'm guessing there wasn't much wiggle room on this one. It sold within the week.

The negotiating I did at dealers 1 and 2 gave me a good feel for how much negotiating room there is on used Tacomas and there isn't much more than a couple thousand (assuming the initial asking price is within reason). It made me realize I'd have to pay a bit more than I wanted to once I found the right truck, but I have no regrets one year later.

Bought mine used from a dealer. Ran into the same problem with them saying they had no leeway on the used Tacomas. 2015 DCSB in great condition with 25k on the clock (I consider this basically brand new for any Toyota). Their listed price on the internet was 28,900. When I got there the actual sticker said 29,900. I showed them the internet add and said I would be starting my negotiations from 28,900. They were cool with that but it was tough to get them down further (remember I'm also in the northeast...)

Long story short I told them I'd take the truck that day for 28. They countered at 28,500 so I said no thanks and left. Got in my car to drive away and the manager came running out and said they would throw in a 10yr/100k bumper to bumper warranty. I said let me think about it, sat in my car for 10min and went back in. I took the deal and was happy with it. They came back with a 5% interest rate (toyota financial) and I almost walked again...was able to get it down to 3% (PNC) though.

FWIW I could not for the life of me find another 2015 with that low miles for anything lower than 29k. I was shopping for months too.

Overall I feel like I got a good deal. It was exactly what I wanted (silver steak DCSB). The key is to make an offer and LEAVE. Has worked for me on every car purchase I've made, they always come calling.

I bought a 2011 ACLB 4x4 base with 71,000 km for $23,000 CAD in 2014. The dealer came down about $1500 from the sticker price and I bought it based on asking prices for similar trucks in the area.

Now if I could do it again I would shop around at banks to secure a line of credit or auto loan and not finance through the dealer. In Canada at least, when buying used you don't get the option for promotional financing deals as those rates typically come through corporate and don't apply to used vehicles. As a young guy with no real assets (house) or credit history (loans) I got hammered on my interested rate - the best they could do was 6.5%, which is totally nuts. Fortunately I saved my pennies and got it paid off in just over a year.

Next truck I buy I'm going to walk on the lot and tell them exactly what I want with no need for financing or any other crap.
