4x4 swap "J" shifter

Is it possible to take a transmission, transfer case, spindles, cv axles, ect. From a 2000 and put it on a 2004 prerunner? I know the 01-04 use a push button 4x4 but the pre 2001 tacomas use the "J" shifter that is 100% manual. Can i use a 2000 manual transfer case and the J shifter on a 04 prerunner with locking hubs? Found a video online and it got me thinking because it seems so easy to not deal with wiring.

You need a transmission from a 2003 or 2004 tacoma if you want it to bolt in. Otherwise you can swap the output shaft from the 2000 into the 2004 transmission.

 

Just did the swap on my 2001 double cab Prerunner, my transmission was from a 2002 (So the junkyard says, they were a PITA) 4x4 5speed single cab and it uses a J-shifter. You could indeed use manual hubs and avoid all the wiring/vacuum lines involved with an ADD. However, if you use an ADD you will need to lock the actuator arm into place so the differential is always engaged. PM if you have any questions, I'm not a mechanic but I know these trucks well.
