So, lotsa guys running Dakars out there I see. But what shocks?

Do the standard lift (1-2" lift) shocks from the normal manufacturers work well? I would think they are very limiting to the travel potential of these springs.

Using the stock shock mounts, what is a good shock that wont limit the springs too much?

I have Dakars, top overload leaf removed, with Bilstein 5125s. Stock shock mount.
Am very happy with the set up.

Thanks for the Quick replies guys!

From what I have read the RCD B110's are a little bit long, and so the bump stops need to be adjusted. Is that right?

I am a little late to the party but yes those are the shocks. They go by many names...extended Bilsteins, RCD Bilsteins, longer 5100's, B110's and their official part # F4-BE5-B110-T5.

    Good job guys!

There are quite a few options of rear shocks to run with the OME Dakar. You can run the OME nitrocharger sport rear shocks. They were designed to be used with the OME Dakar pack but have a conservative extended length so will limit the droop of the pack. The upside of that is, since they are the limiting factor, longer brake lines are not necessary. Other than that you can run the RCD/Bilstein extended length 5100's, the extended length Fox's and Icon rear shocks each have a longer extended and collapsed length, since that is the case you will have to run longer rear brake lines and may have to modify your factory bump stops in order to hit those before you fully collapse the shock. There are also the Bilstein 5160's which have an extended length as well and come with their own brake line extension brackets. You could also run the Bilstein 5125's but since those are a universal shock you would have to look at the extended and collapsed lengths and see which ones you prefer. Also, since those are universal, they would not have vehicle specific valving.

Rear shocks work a little differently. When sourcing rear shocks it is recommended to know what the extended and collapsed length of the shock is and how that works with the rear lift you are going with.

The biggest things to take into consideration are making sure you cycle the suspension to ensure that you are hitting the factory bump stops before you fully collapse the shock and that when the shock is fully extended your brake lines are not taut.

I use skyjacker hydro 7000s on the rear right now (budget) and 5100s up front. Want to get 5100s for the rear soon tho, but i cant complain about the 7000s especially for the price point.

Thank you @HeadStrong Off-Road for your responses and supporting our habits, Great info!

Right now I'm in the research stages of a new build. I'm getting ready to make some hopefully educated purchases that won't need to be made over again too many times. My trucks goals are to be a true Jack-of-all-trades. I don't really crawl, but I do run into the odd rock garden. To be honest most of what my truck will see is pretty mild, dirt roads and desert trails, nothing insane, and a good bit of highway driving to get there, along with daily driver duties, hardware store and lumber yard runs with a few trailer pulls mixed in for good measure.

I'm aiming at a nice mid-travel front end. I have some Icon 2.5 non-res extended travel CO's for the front that I will run with some type of UCA. Im pretty sure on Dakars in the back. Im wondering if the B110/Dakar combo would complement that front end setup for "all around truck" duties?

Or one of the other mentioned shocks?

IMO, the B110's seem to hold their own. I personally had them on my truck with the Dakar pack for quite a while. I use my truck in a similar way as you. I will haul stuff from time to time, I do have consistent weight in the bed of the truck, I will crawl (some), and desert run. The travel seemed to work really well for most things but the one thing that I did notice was the shock did heat up quite a bit when I was desert running. This is really common of non-resi shocks so I did eventually upgrade to a 2.5" resi rear shock.
