With a tow hitch and electric brake controller, I towed 5800lbs 150 miles. It was my eagle talon on a double axle car trailer. Keep it at 65mph or less and I manually controlled the automatic by shifting 1,2,OD off,

    It did fine.

I put a branch new clutch in my truck and when i first loaded the double cab on the trailer in 2 hi, I really had to feather the clutch to get it going. At the next stop sign, I shifted into 4 hi and it started out without having to feather. I use 4 low to pull my pontoon up and out of the water. Ever since I was a kid, it seemed my trucks pulled from a dead stop better in four wheel drive. Then I just pop it into 2 wheel when i get rolling.

Hahaha. What have we not towed. Heaviest for me,in my Tacoma, was a homade 24ft trailer with 2 4wheelers, a ton of corn, feeders and a deer blind... In the rain... No trailer breaks. Hell. I watched a buddy pull a 30ft goose neck cattle trailer a mile down the road with the "goose" inside a spare tire in the bed of his truck.

    BRAKES ARE YOUR WEAK LINK.

Oh to be young again. You can pull anything. Stopping safely it is the problem. I regularly tow 15k with my 3\4 ton. Brakes are the most important. Not power. Even at 5k. You could pull 5k with a Prius. Granted, all things considered, it would hold up under such weight.

I will say the one thing I hate pulling is a 10ft trailer with a ramp. No matter what truck. Such a wind drag.

Biggest thing is be safe. If your not comfortable towing. Or you're questioning it. Don't do it.

Me and pretty much everything I wanted to bring from Chicago to Seattle. Truck weight right at 5100, trailer at 2900. Mostly on I-90 so lots of trucks and long open road, though getting thru urban Chicago and the larger cities in Wisconsin were in play as well. I do have the 2nd gen supercharger and it helped for sure. Took things nice and easy, didn't try to set any speed records. Getting up to Mt. Rushmore was the only challenge, I did start to get a bit hot and had to pull over a few minutes to let things cool down. Otherwise no issues.

I pulled a 2015 Polaris Ranger on a car hauler over Fourth of July Pass here in Idaho (its a short, but steep and curvy pass), 2x. It was a slow go over the pass, no more than 55. My 4 little gerbils did good on their wheels. All stock, no mods or anything. 270K miles on the engine at the time.

Arctic Taco dragging a big box.jpg I hauled this box trailer up the Alcan, maybe 3500# or so. The Taco, didn't like going up or down hills, even lost a shock bushing 350 miles south of Whitehorse. Re-gearing is in the future...
Although it could explain why each AAL broke in 2 places.....

They are rated at 5000. Although, I wouldn't want to tow much more than 3000 or 3500, especially in the hills.

I tow a pop up camper trailer that runs a little under 3000 (I think) all geared up, and while I *can* do more than 45 or 50 up Hwy 50, I have to burry the go fast pedal to do it. Not only does that ruin any semblance of gas mileage I have left, but my dumb k&n cold air intake is obnoxiously loud, too.

I also installed an aftermarket trans cooler that helps keep tranny temps in check while towing.

The inline 4 2.7l is rated at 3,500 pounds, say so on the bumper. The 5K limit is what the v6 is rated for.

Yeah, true. I missed that you had a 2.7L. I live in V6 land, so everything looks like a V6 to me... :)

But I wouldn't tow anything on the bumper anyway. I've always used a hitch.

My old Taco ( RIP ) Current truck that set up with a bigger Polaris Sportsman 500x2 and Yamaha Big Bear loaded with gear 2500lbs. Brakes were an issue before my Tundra upgrade. Slow and steady up the hills 35-50 mph no rush no problems in Arizona heat.Red Toyota with older quads.jpg

Yeah, brakes... I'm going to be putting brakes on my camper trailer. It's only 2500ish pounds, and with more gear in the bed. "Technically" it doesn't need brakes according to the law, but damn I want brakes. That's a lot of weight back there!

Trailer brakes are the ticket, they are in my box trailer's future as well.

    I pull a 1981 Glastron -- about 16 feet with a 140hp 3.0 liter mercruiser and an all steel trailer -

I did install an all-pro offroad bumper with the integrated hitch. Calculated weight is about 800 lbs for the boat, strendrive weighs about 700 lbs and trailer is around 650 and when it full of fuel that adds another 95lbs - so a total of around 2200 lbs.

A 23 foot boat, with V8, 50 gallon gas tank and trailer from the same manufacturer increases the weight to close to 4,800 lbs just to give you comparison of how the weight could double depending on boat size.

For comparison, mine is the small one closest in the photo, next one is 18 foot and the next two are 23 footers with another 18 footer tucked in on the end.
