I've driven heavy trucks too. Raising and hauling cows all over the place you need a big truck. Im not sure exactly what you want to do with a mid-sized truck but for me if you want a nice street, gentlemen truck that can tow a little extra and possibly be better on the highway the 17' Colorado or Canyon would be ideal. But if you are after something that offers more than that and want to get offroad occasionally and have access to lots of aftermarket mod's and support let alone resale value then the Tacoma is the ticket. Plus the Tacoma just looks better. The Colorado is for old men. I'm 50 and considered an old guy but you are as old you as you feel and act so Taco all the way!

Always a bit puzzling to me when I read a review or an opinion that claims a truck to be too "truck like". Isn't that the whole point? I certainly don't want my truck to feel like a wooden wheeled potato wagaon on a rutted road....but damn...Lexus smooth isn't what I'm looking for either.

Funny....I've never once heard anyone say they wished a car was more "truck like". So why would we want our trucks to me more "car like"?

Personally I like the firm, taut ride of my Sport.

This! Out last night with wife and daughter, who are both visual people (artsy), I pointed out a Colorado and said that was the other option for our new truck, my said no it isn't, I replied ya your right it's ugly.

Oh damn, if I'm as old as I feel (this morning) then I must be 90! Actually I just reached the age of 70....and I think the Tacoma would be fine for this ol' fart. Or one of the GM Twins.....I am still researching. I won't be buying anything until later this year when we sell our 37ft fifth-wheel trailer and Chevy Duramax 2500HD.

I only need a truck for general around-the-house-and-garden sorts of uses, and carrying my kayaks 400 miles down to the Gulf Coast a couple times a year. Oh, and also to occasionally pull my motorcycle trailer (under 2500 lbs). I want a mid-sized truck as I have a smallish garage, and my current truck (Duramax 2500HD) is a bit much to insert, and the typical trip running errands around town can be scary! <g>

Let me tell you, it takes a lot to get used to a smaller truck. I've never owned a small truck before. Oh, I just lied. Back in 83 or 84 I owned a Chevy Luv for a few months when my Ford was found dead along the side of the road and I needed something to drive short term. Btw, my long bed Tacoma is as long as a full size truck so might want to do some measuring before buying. Glad to hear your 70 going on 50! :)

Yeah, I've already done some research on dimensions. The Tacoma DC with long bed is a long bugger, but the most critical dimension for my garage is the width - the garage opening is 91 inches. Length is 19 ft 11 inches. I would prefer a longer bed Tacoma, but haven't seen those around here with the double cab, which I want (my wife told me that, so I know that's an absolute!).

One can always use the room in a longer bed.....funny how that happens. Like when I was at work...those rare days with a small work load; odd, something always happened to expand the work to the time allowed!

...^^^... More wisdom here than 1000 Tibetan monks

    . . . .

The Tacoma is an excellent compromise that can be modified to your individual tastes.

Had maybe a dozen Toyota trucks and liked all of them. Had a Ridgeline too, but it was too car like for me. If married with kids and limited off-roading, Ridgeline would be perfect.

I want a mild truck feel ... not a F-350 dually feel ... but a light truck feel that Tacoma gives me.

Based on my #3306 post (and all above replies), I am still pleased with my purchase of '17 Taco DCLB Sport . . . . I would say there are a few things I wish were different, now including my wish for 2" increased rear ride height and improved JBL FM radio reception (as noted on my other threads as of tonight). . . but overall pleased by my Taco Sport !

I very much love mine as well. I am noticing a few things (dash rattle over bumps, creaking clutch), but I have not issue with those small things as long as Toyota takes care of them under warranty at 5k service. We'll see, but those seem to be common issues so I think they be resolved. Other than that I really love the truck. I don't have JBL so I might have the audio system upgraded. The stock one doesn't get as loud as I'd like. I do like the factory head unit though. Will probably just upgrade speakers and add an amp and sub.

wxm8562 - The JBL system is not very loud when cranking all the way up. My 2012 Infiniti & 2016 Outback cranks Stones/Floyd/Hendrix/Zeppelin better than my 17 Taco (at least for this 50 yr old rocker!) . . . .

Yeah, I've heard that. Kind of happy I didn't spend the extra money on JBL. I'm going to take it to a local audio shop and see what they suggest while keeping the factory head unit. I'm guessing an amp, sub, and some speakers will do the trick. Not looking for a bumping system or anything. Just want to be able to go louder and clearer at high volumes.

My wife has a 13 Rav 4 limited and it has a fantastic audio system. One of the best stock systems I've heard in a car. I wish Toyota would have put that system in the Tacoma.

Just priced out a raptor including options that are standard on the ZR2 and it came out to $54,605. A 35% price increase is quite the jump.

The last Chevy I owned was a Vega, but the ZR2 is pretty appealing. It's better equipped than the TRD Pro, with a full-time AWD mode and the front locker, plus optional diesel. And though I think those shocks are a gimmick, if you replace 'em with Fox or Bilstein or King when they wear out, that's no more money than replacing the shicks on the TRD Pro when those are shot. I'm not crazy about the looks of the Colorado, and of course resale and reliability are a question mark. But I'm glad to see some competition.

^Note the Coloranyon's full-time AWD mode is not like the system on manual FJs and GX460s - there is no center diff. Rather, it's more like a conventional T-case that shifts between 2H and 4H automatically. In practice it is not all that robust; you can break the T-case easily if you leave the 4WD selector in the "auto" setting and start hooning.

Sort of like a Honda CRV? Engages front axle when front wheels spin? I've owned a few true AWD vehicles (Subaru, 80 series Cruiser) and I agree, this GM setup doesn't sound simple nor reliable.
