Thinking about buying an ASP 21 inch auto locking type for when I can't carry my pistols (quick walk with the dog, gun free liberal zones, alternative option of force)etc. Any suggestions, thoughts, or tips??

I have some training with them from being prior security forces USMC and a base PMO(MP Assistant). We did have an ASP instructor.

Wondering anyone's thoughts or recommendations on sizes? I am leaning towards a 21 since its 8.25 inches collapsed, but have considered 16 and that's 7.25 collapsed.

    I'm 5 foot 11in - 180lbs fairly long arms reach.

First check your local laws about carry concealed. I'm not a lawyer, but in VA Code I'm sure that would be considered a "spring stick" as written in our code and would be illegal to carry concealed without a CCW.

Personally I'd rather carry a folding knife for the situations you described. Easier to conceal, less legally restrictive and just as effective.

Yes I have a CCW and read the statutes for FL. You have to have your permit and it has to be concealed or holstered. I tend to disagree. A folding knife is 3-4 inches vs an 7-8 inch closed/21-26 expanded baton that has way more striking distance and the ability to assist with detaining.

Either way it depends on how much training the user has with each weapon. I'd rather have distance. I have seen professional knife handlers who in person demonstrate what they can do with a small pocket knife, it is devastating. Reminds me of Donnie Yen from IP Man, Star Wars Rogue One, Hero etc.

I agree, it's more of a comfort thing. You can never go wrong if your comfortable/ confident with your ability to use it and regularly train with it.

Yup it's a thing. Fits right in your pockets or waist. Usually anywhere from 6-9 inches collapsed and up to 26 expanded.

Every fought someone using an ASP in real life? Pieces of shit. PR24 or GTFO in the baton world, most cops will agree.

In your situation I'd carry a blade if you can't carry a gun. I'd be apprehensive about carrying a baton legally, too much shit can go wrong & I'm in the "break contact or use a gun" crowd whenever possible.

ASP batons can be great when used properly. Not as great as the good ol' PR24 but they weren't as easy to carry. I still carry a 21" in my console. With proper training and knowing to only hit with the last 2-4" and you can definitely make an impact on someone. Pun intended.
