You could buy a very inexpensive on. Must be windows xp. To run correctly. I bought an actual toughbook cf-19:like the original fits under my driver seat perfectly.

So I am looking to do this as the dog in the front seat sets off the bongos. I see on Amazon that there is a WiFi version of the ELM327 (Link), opposed/in addition to the Bluetooth version. Has anyone tried the WiFi version with any success? I am thinking that if I go with the WiFi version, after hacking the beeper, I can connect my phone's bluetooth to my stereo as normal, and then use the wifi with the ELM to have some fancy monitoring apps running at the same time.

Has anyone been able to disable the passenger ding on a 16 Taco? I ordered an elm327 BT and am having a heck of a time with it. On both my Windows 10 laptops, I cannot get any commands to go through using putty. The terminal comes up, but nothing displays in it and it isn't accepting any commands (i.e. as I type nothing appears on the screen). I tried it on a Ubuntu machine too and that had all together other issues (most of which are likely a setup issue as I am not real proficient with unix).

I tried several apps on my phone and only got one of them to actually take commands. I get through most of the commands with exception to the last 3...when I try those it just throws an exception (error or denied or something like that, I can't remember exactly). At first I thought maybe I had a bad module, but it works with the Torque app so I don't think that is the problem.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I built a techstream laptop like the dealsr uses. $20.00 cable from ebay. I bought a good used toughbook cf19 and installed software. The techstream software that i ussd only runs under windows xp. I had to google a patch so that i could get windows xp to update. It worked really great on my 2015. Im sure there are all kinds of settings that can be changed since 2016 went to a advanced bcm.

Did this come with Techstream? It only mentions that it works with it, and that it comes with a CD that I would presume would be at the very least driver installs, but curious if it also has TS on it. They also talk about installing TS, but again, never really say if it comes with it. This is a recurring theme on a number of cables I looked at on ebay.

Took my truck to the dealer yesterday for my 6mo service and asked if they could disable the passenger seat belt warning. Bottom line is they said they could not...not that they wouldn't, but they weren't able to. Not sure if they really even tried.

Happy to report that I got my MVCI cable from ebay the other day. I built an XP virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox on my Windows 10 laptop and after some hoop-jumping, got Techstream to work with my truck and was able to disable both the driver and passenger seat belt warning beeps. I didn't intend to disable the driver's warning message, but I did anyway just to see if it would take. I always wear a seat belt, but I don't need to be told to wear it in any off-chance I ride w/o it. Seat belts save lives...I know from experience and get it, now STFU big brother!@

The version of Techstream that shipped with my cable is older, version 10.30.029, which the makers have deemed obsolete. I tried to obtain a newer version but all the resources I found were on some pretty sketchy looking sites. I did try a couple but couldn't get a key that worked, so I made do with what I have and was able to get it to work, thankfully.

If you are running TS and get a message about this, you cannot use it...unless you disconnect from the internet first. TS then fails to do a version check, and gives you 30 uses of the app until it presumably locks you out. Luckily this obsolete version of the software was still recent enough that it was able to work on my relatively new truck...2016 was the last year listed in the connection setup screen, so not sure if this version will work on anything newer than that.

I wrote up a pretty thorough document that walks through installing a virtual machine, loading XP SP3 on it, installing Techsteam on it and what to do if you get the obsolete version message, and finally, how to connect TS to your vehicle and disable the seat belt warning beeping.

Fair warning in advance that this document was tailored around my particular circumstance of what was provided to me when I bought the cable. Your situation may differ depending on what apps they send you on the CD. The VM and XP install is independent of the actual TS install however, so if you need a resource to at least get you through that, this has that in pretty good detail.

I have it uploaded to this post as a PDF document. Figured it could be useful for anyone looking to keep this on the cheap since VirtualBox is free, and for all intents and purposes, so is XP.

Any questions, I'd be happy to help (to whatever extent I can)

nice job dbaxRonin! Using a VM will definitely help with the max 30 uses issue.

I installed the techstream software on a old dell mini that I bought years ago, works great.
A note of caution, you can only use it a certain number of times before it stops running.
Also my scummy dealer (miller in abq) reset the damn seat belt alarm after I had it for work.

Just confirming. This works on my late 2017 Taco. First stage - all steps produce correct data and read back correctly. Using iPhone X with OBD Terminal App, and ELM327 WiFi just purchased from Amazon. I’ll try to remember to post a second stage after a test drive...

But I didn’t need an extender, and I wanted to be able to make this thing work my way. My 2006 Highlander let me make this setting from the dash buttons, and I didn’t want to bother my poor overworked dealer . I did road test, and sure enough it works exactly as advertised.
Now I need a complete list of the Tacoma OBD data structures to find out what other interesting features might be available. Anybody?

Sorry if my tone was too harsh. I’m new to the forum, so please bear with that while I get it dialed in. And I shoulda said thanks for the extender suggestion. Thanks.

Unless you want to hear the beeping for some other reason, you can just desolder the buzzer from the cluster. It takes all of ten minutes to remove.
