I have a 2015 double cab SB V6 with the tow package.

I recently purchased and am refurbishing a 1968 15' travel trailer. Its single axle with electric brakes (that need rebuilding). My guess it that it weights 2,500-3000 dry. Perhaps 3,500 loaded
My truck loaded with my girlfriend and I plus two dogs and gear should be around 4,800 lbs (lets say 5k tops)

I am planning on getting a brake controller.

My questions comes around distribution hitches, sway control, and load assist bump-stops.
Do I need any of them? All of them?

Any other tips for happy hauling are welcome too.

We towed a 16' Scamp weighing around 3,250 in camping trim for seven years with our 05 D/C TRD O/R, tow pkg. Add another 1,250 for wife, genset, coolers, screen room, etc. so fairly comparable to your setup. When we traded for a similar 12, the truck had 200K with at least 75K of those pulling the camper - All over NC with many trips to the Smokies, Canada to Florida, west to NM and down to TX every year.

Definitely get the brake controller and make sure its properly dialed in. I never found the need for a weight distribution hitch but the addition of a friction type anti-sway bar ($75) helped considerably, especially on downhill curves in the mountains. The key for my setup was 12-15% tongue weight. I could usually tell within a few miles of starting out if things needed to be shifted around in the Scamp to correct a sway issue but I never could get it balanced to my satisfaction with our bikes hung off the rear.

Even with the TSB on the springs, the rear suspension is/was borderline weak; having the same problem with our 12 and 19' Scamp but still haven't done anything to correct it yet. A set of Firestone bags may be in the future. I don't think its a safety concern but, with most of our camping being on USFS backroads, the ride sucks.

Tips - Practice panic stops at different speeds so you'll know what to expect and allow extra room between you and the vehicle you're following. If you don't have experience backing a trailer, get some in a local church/school/mall parking lot.

We camp without hookups so these may or may not be applicable to you. Replace all bulbs (interior and exterior) with quality LED's (the difference in power consumption and brightness is amazing). I switched from a single 12V deep cycle to two 6V golf cart batteries wired in series and can go a week in the boonies without recharging. Get a decent screen room with mosquito netting and, if you camp year round, one with drop down sides http://www.pahaque.com/pq/subcat.asp?cid=692&sort=5&ret_id=1455119 A small camper gets a whole lot smaller in cold/wet weather and cooking is much easier outside. If your camper doesn't already have a power vent, consider adding one. I like the MaxxFan.

Good luck with the re-fit and maybe see you on the road one day.

    Thanks for the tips.
I also went to 2 6V over the 1 12 and plan to get LED bulbs.
Looking forward to getting out there
