TRD Valve Caps

Just showing off my latest bling addition. Look closely, they even have locking set screws to keep the kiddies from ripping them off. Pretty snazzy. Allen wrench included.

I rather put lock tight on my valve stems. First review on Amazon reads:
"These started rusting on the inside after a snow storm that left salt on the roads. I thought I would just put the old ones back on but found out that the rust ruined my tire pressure sensor and it cost me $84.88 to fix. Do not put these on your tires unless you live in the desert."

 

Buzz kill. I'm not too worried, but I'll monitor.

Let me know when you see any problems ... I've had em on my truck for over a year now.. live where its grey and salty roads.... so far they are painted CHROME.. so no problem.
The only worry for me is kids in the summertime riding bikes and "upgrading" the bike ... gotta start somewhere I get it... been there.

 

Been hearing about tpms sensors going bad because of these caps. I've been eyeing those too. Lol Looks great on your wheels!

 

I had a spare on my 206 Taco that the dealer put a steel cap on after checking the pressure.... 1 yr later, the TPMS showed a low tire.... it was that spare... the steel ate the aluminum valve stem...nothing salvageable.... DO not mix these metals...use plastic or aluminum..

 

Disimilar metals will always rust... nuff said.

 

Just a heads up. I put some cool metal caps on my old truck. After a winter exposed to road salt and that liquid crap they spray on the roads, they became welded to my valve stems. I broke off two stems in my driveway trying to get them off. I wash my vehicles once a week at a minimum and it didn't seem to help.

I believe it's galvanic corrosion. OP, just put a little petroleum based lube on the threads, not thread locker. It will be fine if you check your pressures regularly. Keep it away from the valve core is all.

Light coating of anti seize works also. I put this between the brake rotors/ drums and the rim contact surface. No issues.

 

Actually I recalled paying $5 three months ago when I ordered them. Bottom line is they were the cheapest thing I ever bought for my truck. I was trying to be funny with the post (the fact I'd even mention them), but now you guys got me paranoid. I think I'll take them back off. How about the King shocks? Do those need to go too?

I bought some too a month ago. Checked on them today. Yep, already rusting at the set screw. Valve stem threads look fine, luckily. Took them off immediately and put the plastic ones back on. They look neat but they're 100% pieces of shit. I'd rather have "boring" valve caps than ones that rust themselves to the valve stems. Went ahead and set up a return on Amazon.

 

Okay, looks like I made a bad investment. Fong Ho did me wrong.

Even though this is an old thread Amazon has these in carbon fiber which shouldn’t cause corrosion problems

 

A set screw tightened down against the threaded TPMS valve stem is not a good idea.
Plus it's a PIA every time you adjust tire pressure. For me, that's every few weeks, since the temperature changes, and I haul heavy chit from time to time.
