I figured I'd make a thread about windshields and the replacement process. I can answer most question.

It seems to me that a lot of folks have questions and or issues with replacements.

Ok, so if a complete paint job is needed- is removal of windshield trim only recommended? Body rusting down into the rain channel too-..

Heard it was best to remove complete windshield instead of fighting tape lines and sanding behind the trim...... that true?

Believe it or not most body shops paint the cars with the glass in. I always felt its best with the glass out.

I've redone windshield after other installers because of leaks. The pinchweld should always be prep before the install. Weather that being wire wheeled or just a simple sand down.

I'm facing a repaint cause mine is toast!! My local preferred body shop recommended pull windshield and soda blast roof- cause rust is so bad! Went on to say pull rear glass too then paint. I'm a huge fan of doin Right but was wondering if still could be prepped and painted by just removing the glass trim only? What ya think? Oh and my glass is original to 2006. Manufacture sticker in door jamb says 12/05...

It would be easier just to remove the glass. Most moldings on our trucks is molded to the glass. Especially on our rear windows its all one piece. When I get out of work I'll check to make sure if the front windshield molding is actually attached to the glass or not I'll definitely let you know.

So please give a run down on the best aftermarket brands of glass? See here in florida free windshield replacement by insurance company is mandatory only they offer the aftermarket brand free of charge.... if ya want Toyota oem, it costs ya something I'm told. I've also been told by a safelite auto glass guy that windshields are only rated for so many years before a replacement should be gotten.... any truth to that?

I've had Honda, Mazda and Acura glass replaced, all under our glass law. Never had a problem getting OE, other than waiting for an order to come in, instead of off the shelf stock. But I never used or even called Safelite.

I've used independent glass shops that also do commercial work and have a mobile unit for an automotive section. They even do the glass on crane cabs........

Of course it's been a while (thankfully) since I needed glass. Hopefully the rules haven't changed though.

That's false... I work in an Insurance Fraud Division at the moment and Florida like AZ is a zero Deductible glass state so there is a ton of auto glass fraud so they say anything to get you to replace your windshield. Glass will last until it breaks or has a structural integrity issue that is what can limit time Like a chip or what ever and what is the time line I don't know. you can have a cracked wind shield and its really not going to affect anything because the class is tempered and treated and its meant to crack but state law forbid you having a cracked windshield in AZ hence why insurance covers it. but if your windshield is cracked it is good until it breaks.

Also OEM Glass is going to be the best for sure any after market glass is just gonna be cheaply made and more likely to crack but in AZ if you request OEM glass the insurance will pay for it no charge to you if the windshield that was insured and broken was OEM. So under insurance replacement they are required to replaced the glass with exactly what you had in the vehicle at the time it was damaged they cant downgrade you from OEM to Aftermarket unless they tell you.

Also when you replace your windshield via insurance i would just call your insurance company and use one of their preferred shops most of these shops that offer you $100 bucks to replace with insurance are committing fraud. Issue here in AZ. BUT YOU DIDN'T HEAR IT FROM ME :anonymous:

Windshield are not tempered. They are laminated. And which a lot of newer cars are using for door glass also. Tempered glass will shatter in thousand of pieces. Laminated glass will break but not shatter. Laminated glass is two pieces with the laminate in-between. Just a FYI

I just had a little chip top center and in a few days it has run down and across the drivers side. Satellite says if I want OEM, they have to order it but they have aftermarket in stock. From what Iv'e read on here and the internet, it seems the OEM is junk and cracking a lot. Should I make them put OEM in or does it matter? I have a 2017 with 6k on the clock. Thanks

If this was for me, Safelite and Allstate said they warranty all of it either way. I was wondering if there is a chance the aftermarket glass would be stronger. We already know that OEM is pretty weak it seems.
