Don't bash me too hard but I'm new to the different tire size game. My truck has Method wheels with LT265/75r16 and my spare is the stock P265/70r16. I plan to buy a new rear bumper.

My question is should I buy a new rim and tire to match my current set on the truck or will the spare work in a pinch? Also if I have to buy a new one to match will it mount where the factory spare is ok or do I need to fork over more money for a swing gate?

    Thank youScreenshot_2016-12-17-14-51-22.jpg

My spare had been under my truck for 12 years, never been on the truck but I run good tires and replace them before they are worn out. When they did the frame replacement they had to replace the hanging mech as it had also rusted. It's only about an inch different in height so no big deal using it in a pinch.

Yeah I don't plan to use it. I do the same with keeping good tires but you never know. Just don't want to screw anything up if I have to use it as a spare for say a day or two.

I needed to use my spare for more than a get yah home, had to run it for about a week while sortin some things out. I run a 265/75/16 and the spare is mounted on a wheel that matches the width and offset of the wheels on the truck (it's an inexpensive aluminum wheel). The 265/75/16 will fit under bed in the stock location without modification you just need to line it up when lifting it into place.

I also drive off-road so if I bugger up a tire, when I get home I will buy one new tire, the spare will be rotated in with the new tire and the good tire side opposite will be moved to the spare location.

If you can afford it a matching wheel and tire will allow you to do 5 tire rotations which is nice, but it isn't required. Another option is to mount a 265/75-16 to the spare and it will fit underneath without issue. Lastly you can keep what you have, 265/70-16, and still use it safely as long as it isn't used on an axle with a locking differential, those two sizes are close enough that with an open diff it won't harm the gears or differential. I wouldn't run on it for a month or anything but if you have a flat it will work without issue.
