    Let me slow that down

    1. I forgot to come by your place and get the bullets.

    2. Do you or @ArcherTaco want to get some small pistol primers?

Yup! And love it. Comparing it to the brandnew 458 socom brass right now and the tumbled stuff looks better then the new stuff!

Nice, I've had my eye on an STM setup a few years now. Hoping to pick up a setup when I start reloading again. Got about 3k 40S&W brass that can use a good cleaning.

What are your initial thoughts on the 458 socom? I heard about it a short time ago, but never looked into it. One wild ass round!

Its going to be a fun little playing round, just looking at the case its very well engineered and thick for something that runs in an ar15. And its relatively low pressure round at 35,000psi so i bet ill get 15+ reloads out of a case being what others are saying and just the beef of this case. And throwing 325gr rounds at 1600-1700 fps sounds like a fun time.

Its not a long range gun and i didnt buy it thinking it was, with quick load it looks like a 2" high zero at 100yds ill be ~12 inches low at 200

But if i needed to shoot over a wall at a guy it can be done:D

I also am looking forward to going to a range and grabbing a magazine of 300blk and chamber a round and watch the whole round pop out of the end just to watch the guy next to me's mouth drop.

I wonder why someone just didn't make a 45-70 upper for it. Overall story behind the case design, makes me think of the 338 Lapua. Pretty interesting.

Sounds like a fun one indeed, please record the reaction. I'd love to see their faces when that round slides out of the barrel haha

Did you get any dies for the 458 yet? I'd like to see those compared as well, must be a honking chunk of metal.

Its "ballisticly similar" to a 45-70 if your not a reloader if the 45-70 but are with the 458. Due to old trap door 45-70s out in the world companys can not load a full load that a modern marlin can take because it only takes one wahoo to load a high load in a trap door and blow his face off to get a company sued. With that advantage i can load the 458 a little hot and out run the 45-70 on lighter (300gr) bullets. That and C.O.A.L is why the socom is a nice twin for the ar platform.

Ill have to figure out a way to record that so we can all get a laugh out of their dumbfoundedness

Got some hornady dies but now im kicking back and forth the idea of getting redding dies for it now. At the tune of twice as much...

That's makes a lot of sense, I really like the concept. I remember first hearing about the 458 in an article or something, about Special Ops wanting something bigger than the 556 correct?

It's a funny looking case (in a cool way) with the rim being so small.

I like the cool factor behind the .50 beowolf as well on the AR platform.

Redding dies are nice, I have some but can't remember what caliber it was for. I like the Forster Comp dies more.

These get full sizing or just the neck?

Yup the original reason was for one shot take downs and car stoppers.

It looks bad ass! Better then the 300blk where the bullet is longer then the case..
This picture just makes me happy.
    IMG_2305.jpg

I wanted a "50" as well but the socom just has so many benifits vs the b that it was a no brainer. Bottle neck case instead of a strait wall, and waaaaaaayyyy more bullets to select from. 100gr aluminum to 600+ leads.

Reddings are very nice. I have been reading that some sizeing dies (you can only full length size) bump the shoulder to far back and over work the cases so im hoping the hornadys do not do that. It could be worse. I could get CH-40 dies and give up my kidney for the set of dies

All full length dies can bump the shoulder too far back. Proper die setup is the key. You can't just screw a die down to contact the shell holder and rock on.

Exactly. But these guys have had a few where they could not shave enough off of a matching brand shell plate to get it to set up right. Supposedly he got a replacement die and had to buy a new shell plate and still had problems.. sounds a little funny and i really like hornady dies so i hope this is not going to be a big problem

Most people shave the bottom of the die or get a thinner shell holder if it doesn't bump the shoulder back enough. If the die is moving it too far back, the die should be screwed out farther from the shell holder. Sounds like it might have been user error.

Never know. Could have been a bad run of dies.

Yeah I'd have done the same thing.

Definitely cool, but also looks like each mag weighs 10lbs haha.

600gr leads sounds buck wild, I'd shot 400+ gr leads through my 454 Casull. Packs a wallop, I can only do 4 shots before having to stop.
