I never changed it, totally forgot about it. The people at the shop never mentioned it either, but still is my fault for not paying attention to it.

Question for OP or anybody else with experience working on the new tacos... In the 2016 tacoma is the ring gear the same size as previous models, meaning 8" not 8.8? I am looking into 4.88 gears and a detroit truetrac but want to wait and do it all at once when all the parts are available. They have a DTT listed under eaton part # 913A541 that is for the up to 2015 tacoma w/ 6 SPD manual and V6, and I am wondering if the 2016 TRD sport got that diff still or if it is a totally new diff.

If your Sport has an automatic trans, it has the 8" diff. If you have a manual you have the 8.75.

I have the manual so I guess that means Ill have to wait a while for eaton to come out with the new diff parts :/

Because you can buy a mini kit and reuse some of your parts. However most recommend a full kit so everything wears in evenly.

I think its probably worth noting... this is one of those times where you dont want to save $100 bucks by cheaping out on a rebuild kit of one of the more expensive single assemblies on your truck outside the engine bay. Just me though

Because some people skip master kits on diffs with low miles. I like to use master kits anytime I regear to have nice fresh bearings and seals.

So I put together this excel sheet for the third Gens. Basically, enter all fields that are yellow. First block at the top is for up to 4 different tire sizes. Middle blocks let you set trans Gears and diff ratios (set for 3rd gen already)The larger block at the bottom lets you set an RPM, trans gear, diff ratio, Tire Number (which is just tire size from the top chart). Outputs are Driveshaft RPM Axle RPM, and Speed in MPH.

Might be useful for comparing different vehicles or comparing different tire size options and their affects. Also might not be useful at all, but I find it much more informative than the online calculators that just give you the 1:1.

Also please let me know if you think there are any mistakes. Its not very pretty but it works.

Has anyone looked at putting an 8" rear end from 05-15 tacoma in their 16-17 to replace these 8.75"? Just thinking about gear availability...I have heard to many horror stories about the Nitro's. I would like to go with Yukon or?..

Or does anyone have inside info on other manufacturers coming out with 4:88's for the 8.75" ?

Horror stories? Got any posts? I saw only 1 nitro failure, seemed like a bad batch of gears but nothing rock solid. Have seen 1 failure of a new stock rear as well. That one just destroyed itself after 4 wheel drive...

Ya..I read about the bad batch of gears..I have heard from mechanics they are harder to get set correctly. One local gear guy here wont even touch them...said they wouldnt warranty the ones that were bad. Another said the same thing about them not wanting to warranty..he had 2 instances where the gears were bad.. Wanted me to sign a waiver if I used Nitro..so I wouldnt come back and ask for my $ back when they fail. His stories were with Jeeps...he said he did just do a set on a 2016 Tacoma and they were difficult but he got them lined-out and they were quite.

I'm still on the fence whether or not larger gears are absolutely needed or not for the price... I have 33" tires, campershell, bumpers and whatnot but to spend close to $3-3.5K after parts and labor is it required? if all it does if give you a little more torque initially and I don't plan on ever going to 35's is it worth it for a weekend warrior on fire roads and doesn't do any rock crawling?

that California for ya... I may hold off and just get sliders, front skid plate and roof rack like I wanted and get gears at a later date...

I mean I'm lucky enough to know a guy who does it for $200 per diff and can get gears cheaper, but still. I wouldn't pay that much for gears ever.
