So I was driving home from work today and this happened. Crossed a set of train tracks, and the recently replaced lower ball joint snapped clean off, ripping the upper ball joint apart and having the truck use the tire as a ski until 20170217_141016.jpg

Replacing lower ball joints at 100K seems to be the rule of thumb and the "word on the playground" here on TacomaWorld. Mine were a little sloppy, so I swapped them with OEM... Glad I did. Sorry about your truck!

Did you torque them properly when you installed them? Also, as someone else asked, what brand were they?

Which part(s) broke? The 4 retaining bolts, or the main conical shaped stud?

I have replaced mine 3 times now. 160,000 and 240,000. What brand did you go with? Loctite and torque the bolts?

Thats so shitty it was somewhat of a newer joint too, that hurts! Im curious as well as to what brand it was? Surly it wasnt a toyota joint to prematurely snap like that im guessing...on such a massively critical component like that it annoys the shit outta me that the aftermarket produces such crap for replacements! It also really annoys me that the engineers at toyota designed that joint to be like that, where the ball "hangs" from the cup! Plain stupid in my opinion! Of course thats gunna be a super weak point, then in such a critical area, i dont get it... Of course they wised up later on to design them where they sit in the cup instead of hang, well duh!!! Wouldn't that be like common sense??

Didn't know they were doing the hover conversions on Tacomas now!

Hope the damage isn't too bad, OP. Good luck.

Unsure of the ball joint brand. The previous owner had them replaced for vehicle safety before I bought it. Definitely not OEM though. No warning rattling, nothing, just snap and the result above.
