I am considering purchasing a camping trailer with a dry weight of 4200 lbs for my son. I will need to tow it 40 miles home, then tow it 215 miles to my son's.

I would love some input for anyone who has pushed their Tacoma to it's limits like this.

    Thank you.

I've towed a 6k lb boat a few times but it wasn't that far of a trip. just keep an eye on everything and keep it 55mph

I frequently tow a 22' hybrid camper dry weight 3750 + gear + family, etc for 300+ mile trips. Granted I have upgraded suspension and airbags. Keep it in 4th and with a brake controller you should be fine.
Is your's a DC or AC? My 2010 DCLB has a max of 6500#.

I believe if you have the v6 with factory tow pack, you can tow 6500 (i wouldnt go that high but it can be done)

If it HAS the "tow package", it is 6500 pounds.
If it does NOT, it is 3500.
While you can add all the parts of a tow package, you cannot add a "tow package". It either ships with it from factory, or it does not.

The reason is because it impacts the GCWR that the vehicle is registered with.

This doesn't mean that the vehicle can't be outfit to safely deal with the load -- it certainly CAN be. It only means that if you come across a cop who is a real stickler, they might try to give you a hard time. If the vehicle is fully outfit with all the proper parts (not necessarily factory branded parts, but suitable replacements) to make it properly able to handle the load, then you *probably* would be able to either talk your way out of it with the cop, or make an impassioned plea to the court, begging for mercy, and they *may* let you off the hook, or at least reduce it to something meaningless.

I regularly pull WELL OVER 6500 pounds with my 4-cyl (there is no "factory tow package" available for 4-cyl), which is outfit to handle the load safely, and for what its worth, no cop has ever taken a second glance at me while pulling huge loads. They're more interested in harassing people with loads that *look* dangerous or big, and while I move *heavy* loads, they don't generally look all that, and they certainly look safe, secure, and ARE under control.

In fact, I've been harassed by cops about trailers precisely twice, during separate "trailer blitz"'s that they do from time to time (when they stop everybody and weigh and inspect everything). Once was because the load exceeded the limits printed on the side of the TIRES on the trailer (they didn't give a damn that I was around 2500 pounds over the GCWR) -- I had to wait for someone I called to show up with another trailer so I could split the load and they let me go with a warning of "don't do that", and the other time they saw something that they thought looked like a piece of bailing wire that was holding the safety chain together -- it was actually secure and they let me go as soon as they took a proper look at it. In the second instance, I was also well over the GCWR.

1997 4Runner rated for 5000lbs. Load weight: 6700lbs with electric brakes.
The suspension is a bit soft for this but it pulls and handles just fine. Mind you I kept to back roads and didn't go over 50 mph.
I no longer have this truck. I have since upgraded to my 2013 Limited.
