OEM tires okay to drive on beach?

Hello folks,

I purchased my first Tacoma ever this past Jan. I will be in the Outer banks, NC this June and may drive on the beach. Of course I have 4X4, but I am worried my OEM tires that came on the truck may be an issue on the beach. They are 265, 65, 17 inch Firestone Destination LE2's. I was looking at getting a set of Bridgestone KO2's but they are $1,145 installed. They will only offer me up to $100 per trade in on my OEM tires, so I was hoping they may be good enough for beach driving until I need new tires. What is your experience and recommendation? Thank you for your input as I am new to 4X4's and Tacomas.

By the way, the KO2's were 275, 65, 17. 10 mm wider than my factory tires. I was told they wouldn't have issues with rubbing, etc. on a stock 2016.

We needed no permits of any kind to drive there. I drove my 02 F150 4x4 Super cab there with aired down tires to 15-18 psi and fully loaded with 5 people and all of our stuff (a lot of food and refreshments) we had no problems whatsoever. Even drove around on the beach a lot and drove around in the residential (again -nothing paved up there) areas to sight see. drove as far north as we could (to Carova) before having to turn around at the Virgina border (there is a barricade there) .

Sorry, should have been more clear. You are correct, the northern beaches do not require a permit. They are not part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. If you plan to drive the beach from Oregon Inlet and southward, including Hatteras Island and Ocracoke, you will need to purchase the required permits and drive only in the desiginated areas.

Yall are thinking of soft loosen sand... He will be going to the beach where he could see mounds and water puddles or wet soft sand. Slick streets tires do NOT work in all sand environment lol. Just air down drive with momentum over softer and/or wetter sand and bring a shovel, floor mat and straps.

If you don't have a locker or limited slip rear basically an open diff you can do this trick ......

Engage you e -brake a couple clicks , this will create enough friction it will send equal power to both axles . This is commonly called a poor man's locker . Just remember once you've regained foward momentum to disengage the e brake
