After reading all the hate on this site regarding the transmission shifting issues on our third gens im wondering what I am missing. I have noticed nothing abnormal, worrisome, annoying, or otherwise with my transmission. It leaves me wondering if (A) I got lucky or (B) I am just not a picky enough driver to notice the issues that others seem to hate so much. Now I only have 1000 miles on it so I wonder if the problems just arent there yet. Also I happen to be a very cautious driver, always slow on the accelerator and generally not aggressive at all. Only time will tell.

I barely have any transmission issues. Only small ones I had were fixed by the first TSB. The people that post on here are usually the ones who have problems. Truck drives fantastic for me.

no issues with my 2016- 13K miles. no TSB's done, and I have never used the ECT button. Also a cautious driver, and I adhered to the break in procedure in the manual.
As a side note, I ask 3rd gen owners I meet if they are happy- so far out of 6 questioned, 100% yes and 100% never heard of TacomaWorld- take from that what you will.

I guess what I am really wondering is if these issues take a truly discerning driver to notice. Is there a chance that this may be the case? Are the trucks with these issues truly a nightmare for EVERYONE to drive, or just for "driving enthusiasts"?

Perhaps I am just not an educated enough driver to notice the problem.

Only issue I would be worried about is if your transmission was filled properly. Many reports of low fluid. But many like yourself have had no issues whatsoever myself included. I can see how some might be annoyed by the constant shifting which I attribute to more gears and how they drive but then again that is based on driving my truck and not theirs.

I strongly suggest you just drive and enjoy. Yes there are many issues that people report and have some validity but others seem frivolous to me. So read and keep aware but don't let it consume you and let you start hearing noises and imagining issues that you have read about. I did for a couple of weeks and started regretting buying this truck until I realized I had no issues and was becoming sensitized because of the clowns and drama queens exciting the crowd over nothing. I am not saying some don't have issues. I am just saying don't let yourself get sucked in to the negativity. In a few years we will see if things are really that bad or if they were just new model bugs.

I had a fog light bulb fail last week. Not burnt just broken filament. I am going to try and have Toyota lemon my truck and provide me with a new one.......... add this to the list of defective parts of the Turd Gen.

    Enjoy the truck.

I haven't owned a car with a completely smooth transmission yet. Heck, even my 2008 honda civic transmission felt clunky at times.

you should take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt. Probably this engine/trans combo is an absolute horror show to some, to another person the same vehicle would be OK.
And you are not the first person to start a thread with this subject- hopefully it will give you some insight and not result in any more members getting banned......

Mine's fine too, it's just different. Cars are wimping out on power to get mileage and trying to make us happy with gearing. I can live with it.

Only thing I don't like about mine is the down shift it does when trying to maintain a highway speed of 70mph+ when going on an overpass or in a head wind. Sometimes it just shifts to 5th, other times if there is a head or cross wind it shifts to 4th. Other then that, I have no real issues with the transmission. I also account this "gear hunting" at highway speeds to the fact its a 6 speed slushbox with no ummfff in 6th gear. Our Durango with a 8 speed slushbox is guilty of the same from time to time.

Mine is good now that I filled the damn tranny myself, and they did the TSB....(Mine only had the "not shift back after a hill while in Cruise")
Another member here, with the exact truck came over to meet me, as I bought a Bed Mat for him was saying his drove "rough"...
So, I drove his truck up and down our road.... It was really slow to shift from P/D D/R, .... and would clunk into gear...

He drove my truck and then realized how it could feel if it's FULL of fluid..!!

He went to the dealer that week...!!

I love my truck, now that I filled everything that Toyota did not...!!:canada:

It seems most folks that complain about transmission 'hunting' issues have these variables in common:

    - Cruise control set to 70+
    - live in hilly or higher elevation area

This is the only thing that irks me about my Taco, but I can live with it and not lose any sleep. I did however seek out aftermarket intake and exhaust upgrades that could potentially increase torque at higher speeds/RPM's. I've got both an AFE cold air intake w/scoop and an MBRP exhaust en route. If the result of these mods is simply slightly less downshifting at highway speeds, I'll be happy.
