It honestly doesn't look that bad. The gravel just needs to be graded and rolled, the section that's already blacktop can be top coated or maybe widened depending on what kind of paver the contractor has. If you want to change the grade on it you would be better of dozing over the old blacktop and just putting gravel down. It would be alot cheaper and it's easier to drive on in the winter. If the right gravel is used and the road is bedded and drained well it will last a very long time.

A good dozer operator can knock that out in a day and it wouldn't cost a whole lot at all.

The issue is drainage, the entire area stays pretty wet all year round so any time gravel gets put down within a small amount of time it all ends up washed away. The erosion out there is a serious problem which is why the grade of the road, width, and everything else you mentioned needs to be fixed :p

And the entire county are a bunch of lazy turds so nothing ever gets done when you hire people around there
I'd really like to find a company that can tackle the project and not screw us over :)

On my road coming in, which is a mile from the last county maintained road, over the years we have had to put large amounts of gravel down, since the clay around here eats it. Several layers of 4", drive on then for a while to work it in, then 3", then #62 gravel, then #57, then dense grade to top it off. It took almost 5 years to stabilize the road but now it's not bad. It does need to be graded every so often to correct runoff. It can be a pain, that's for sure.

It's all about the crown of the road and the drainage. Changing gravel size helps alot but if it settles alot and makes pot holes when you backfill with a denser grade it makes the pot hole worse actually. Water bars work great for erosion but aren't exactly fun to drive over daily. To properly create a gravel road takes alot of planning and careful excavation work. A good operator can read the terrain and understands the impact he is making. Sadly it's hard to find someone with that knowledge that will do residential work, they typically follow the dollar and end up working for a large company.

So any recommendations you can make for me to get to a good enough situation that would allow EMS to get to the house?

I personally would have someone come in with a skid steer to clean the driveway up and smooth it out then have some dense grade gravel brought in and dropped. Then have the guy smooth that out and compact it. An ambulance won't have an issue getting up that and if you keep an eye on the driveway and fix issues before they erode the road bed you won't have any issues. You have to maintain a gravel road. If you know someone that can come operate a skid steer for you it won't cost much to rent one and then just call the local quarry and have some gravel delivered.

Anyone familiar with flux core welders? I learned to weld probably 10 years ago on a mechanical contractor grade arc welder and its all I have ever used. Flux core sounds... nice? but im not overly familiar. Just looking for something to start fabricating things for the truck and with this house, 240 would be a pain to wire so im trying to stick to 120.

Major concern is power, can it actually handle something that wont be load bearing but damn sure can't be breaking on me? Keep hearing people gripe about these 120 rigs not having enough power to be reliable. Disclaimer, most of the videos I watch with guys using these wire fed rigs, takes 4 or 5 attempts to get a puddle and they jump every time it sparks so.......

Projects would be the standard bed accessories and eventually sliders. And for the record, the slag doesn't bother me at all so long as its solid, I don't really care about looks. Brush and some paint can fix that

I weld with 120 mig. I use 75/25 gas and weld with .035 wire. I have welded everything on my truck with it, and it hasn't let me down yet.

Pretty sure @beertimecontinuum is using 120v flux core with a gas shield too; "super welds".
:boink: He'll drop some knowledge in here I'm sure. We used that to weld my sliders on and they're not going anywhere. I've lifted the truck with them several times before.

Figured as much. Only real experience I have is on the shop arc rig a while ago. We didn't use mig and I only recently heard about flux core. Just never used a home unit and those 120 flux look nice so long as they can do the job. Which looks like they can just fine

I don't use flux though, I used hard wire with gas. As for flux you have shielded wire (which requires no gas) and you have dual shield (which requires gas and has a much nicer appearance)
