Sold my first Gen and purchased a 2014 DCLB last summer. I was spoiled with a cap on my last truck and have been looking for months for a used option. I think I've located a really good option on a color-matched Leer XL but have 3 questions for those with more experience in this area. Cap is a few hours drive so I'm trying to get all my info straight before pulling the trigger.

    1. Anyone have experience retrofitting side windoors (I think these are 2/3 sliders) with windoors? Is it possible/cost effective?

    2. Latches look pretty rusty, correct? I don't know how old cap is but seems like I should get these replaced by dealer?

    3. Excited this come with a rack installed already- I'll probably be moving lumber 1/3, my large kayak 1/3 time, and hopefully bikes in the future. Does anyone know how easy it would be to install a yakima/thule system on these no name square racks?

#3: bar size will determine how easy/hard it is to add thule/yakima parts. But I'm sure you can do it in the end.

Subbed to hear about win-door swaps. (Been dreaming!)

And one more question: Apparently this cap was modified to fit a 2012, which involved removing or doing something else to the tailgate skirt. I have a 2014 and the dealer is informing me I need to replace the plastic skirt or liner at the bottom of the window to conform to my tailgate better. I get the idea but can't form a picture in my mind. Can any of you out there take a pic of what this situation might look like? i.e. a pic of the tailgate skirt on a Leer XL on a 2013-2015 model??

AFAIK the 2012 and 2014 tailgate shapes are identical; it's 2016-17 that's new. And, if you want to carry bikes with he front wheels removed and use fork mounts (front) and wheel trays (rear) there are lots of options to Yakima or Thule that may be easy to attach to those crossbars. Rocky Mounts, Kuat, etc.

    1. Windoors will cost anywhere from $249.00 each and up for just the windoor plus the labor to install. I have only seen framed windoor and the shell your interested in has frame less windows. It may or may not be possible to replace them. The Leer dealer should be able to tell you if it's possible to replace them.
    2. The latches do look rusty, you could take them off and clean them up and repaint them yourself if the dealer won't replace them. You must live somewhere up North with snow and they use salt.
    3. I don't know about.
    4. The rear window/door from 2005-2015 didn't change, so no modifications should need to be done. The main thing to watch out for on shells for 2005-2015 is to make sure your getting a shell for a DCSB or an Access Cab and NOT one from regular cab.
I hope this helps, if you have any more questions just ask.

I looked into swapping out my sliding windows for Windoors and was told this is only possible when ordering the cap since the Windoors are actually a different size. Maybe someone can prove me wrong, but that is what I was told.

As for the roof rack bars, I have Yakima products and they make adapters to attach a variety of bar types.

I phoned Snugtop the other day... it turns out that windoors are available for my model of topper; they're about $350 each side. (Plus time to install, of course.)
