Well I will throw my 2 cents in about the 3.5 EB. Before I purchased my 17, I had a 12 F150 EB 4x4. You are correct they have some power and will scoot. My issue being after reading the f150 forums is that the engine builds up a bit of carbon and because of the turbos you cant put some cleaner in to get rid of it (the cleaner would damage the turbos). Ford says in order to clean one would have to bring in the truck and they would remove the heads to clean out the carbon. Thats seems way too much to do something so minor (and too expensive). Also if a turbo goes bad, it is not a cheap fix, dealer will charge about $4K each. I had over 150K on the truck and did notice the "missing" that most reported with carbon build up. Maybe Ford has recently come up with a new way or fix for this but I havent heard of one. Anyway I needed better gas mileage since the ford was only getting about 16 mpg, and always wanted a Toyota truck.

    No more Turd-gen :)
This is not a Ford specific issue. Plenty of manufacturers are having carbon buildup issues with turbo charged, direct injected engines. It seems to be a by product of making more power and getting better mpgs out of smaller and smaller engines. Try climbing into a BMW 335 sometime and lemme know when the turbo wastegates start rattling, the HDP injectors fail or the intake has to be removed to walnut blast the carbon out that you spoke of.
Everybody these days are quick to jump into power house little engines with all sorts of technology on them but have little concern as to the cost of maintaining it until they get 50K miles and problems start to surface. The engines of today are better at making power and getting mpgs but IMHO if its at the cost of reliability im not sure its worth it...atleast to me. That's why I chose a 4.0L V6 with as little technology as possible in my 4runner instead of a 3.0L twin turbo direct injected, double vanos with valvetronic wallet empting nightmare. Sure the 4runner mpg sucks and its not very fast but ill give you a tow when I see you broke down a country road turbo billowing smoke or the vehicle shaking from a piezo injector dumping fuel.
Don't get me wrong Im impressed with what todays engineering and technology is producing Im just not ready to sink my hard earned cash in it for the long haul. On the flip side I hate the 3rd gens and think Toyota dropped the ball on quality control so I imagine your damned if you do and damned if you don't.

As @TRDinOhio said, the carbon buildup is a common issue. Dealt with it on my old '07 335i, too. I think the dealers charged $300-400 or so to clean it out. A suggested DIY solution was to run the vehicle at high RPMs (4000+) for about 10-15 minutes on the highway every couple months. No experience with whether or not that helped, but that's what I recall reading.

Carbon Build Up is a result of Direct Injection, I believe the reason for the 2 different injections in the Tacoma is specifically designed to break up the Carbon.

^^^ This is a main reason I opted for the Tacoma.
Note that Ford has put the duel injection tech into the 3.5 turbo 2017 and in 2018 it will be in the 2018 2.7 turbo as well .
    (acknowledgement of a problem for Ford !! ? )

Looks alright to me. My Dad had a 1940 Ford pickup like this1940 Ford pickup.jpg
But black and a little beat up. Him and my grandpa were Kansas bootleggers as a sidejob from the farm. They had a '51 Mercury flathead V8 in it with an Edelbrock manifold and a 4bbl carburetor, and a 4spd transmission. My cousin still has it on the Nebraska farm.

LoL that's okay lol. Until, they pay my monthly note there opinion will mean very little to me. I was pondering get the Colorado with the 2.8 Duramax then upgrading it to twin turbos. It would make for a monster of a midsize truck. Plus I missed my from locker since my H3T Alpha days lol.

I forgot the ZR2 comes with factory sliders, full skid plates, and clearance bumpers. I would change those out though for some steel ones though.
