Crazy late reply... but from what I understand with the TRD, is that most of the tone is from the actual resonator tip. The actual muffler does hardly anything except allow a more of a free flow.
Besides the placebo effect, I never noticed either.

Forgive the resurrection of an older thread but this was a great guide. Got mine swapped out. Was a little bit of a pain getting the tip back over the axle at first but i got it. I noticed there's just a little extra space between my TRD exhaust, gasket and the y-pipe. No leaks (drove around for 10 mins, tested the work, checked back under the truck 15 mins later) is this OK based on the install? I Tried pushing the exhaust a little closer but doesnt seem to move any closer just with the way the fit went for me.

    Thanks!

Your install is incorrect. The bolts are necked, and the large diameter near the threaded end needs to pass completely through the holes on the cat back flange and bottom on the face of the other flange. Installed properly there is a gap between the flanges, they do not touch each other. You bent both flanges. Not the end of the world however, you can bend the flanges back into shape and install the bolts correctly and be done with it.

Thank you for this tread, was super helpful. I just did the install on my 06 crew, sb. Was pretty easy except for getting the flange bolts started back in, I had to clamp the flanges together then align the holes then sink the bolts I’m getting a shutter sound almost like a exhaust shield rattle sound when truck shifts to second. I’m guessing could be a leak? I’ll have to mess with it more tmrw.

For anyone wondering I found/fixed the cause of my leak. There was a small amount of old gasket left on top at the flange. I cleaned that put a new bolt/spring kit from advanced ($15) also had to slightly bend the rear hanger up to tilt the front down at flange for better alignment. Also the clamp on my cat shield was broken so replaced that and am now purring like a kitten
