Hello fellow Taco owners, Just bought my first Taco and I want to add a lift with wheels and tires but im a bit confused as to which lift to use and tire size after that.. I do know what wheels and tires i want but just not sure of the size..

Stock W&T is 245/75R16. I "Want" to go 3" lift with 17in wheels but im not sure that will work for me or not. I DO NOT plan to do any rock climbing or serious mudding. I DO plan to drive daily and sometimes pull a trailer. This will also be used during deer season to refill feeders and or place stands but the land is not to rough.

Can you guys give me some ideas that I can look at or something I havent thought of. Talking to 4X4 shops does no good since they are all about making money.

Welcome to TW! This place is a wealth of knowledge and ultimately the decision on what lift you want is yours. Just spend some time searching Tacoma world by looking at other people's build threads or just simply search suspension lifts and you'll have all the info you need.

If you're going with just leveling out the front a very popular method is using Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks. It will allow you to level the front re-using your stock springs.

If you're going with a 3" lift obviously it's more expensive and will require swapping out the UCA's (upper control arms) and of course a lot of the factory suspension parts.

Sounds like your set on wheels and tires so that might be a factor over leveling out the front vs doing a 3" lift. Will your new wheel and tire combo be too big for just leveling? All kinds of things to consider. Others with lifts I'm sure will chime in to guide you on your path.

    Good luck and happy modding!

Thanks Guys, yeah I thought of just leveling it and stay with 16in but im old school and back then if you didnt have a nice lift you didnt count.. Last 4x4 I owned was a 72 Bronco back in late 80's.. Mean machine but was lifted when I purchased it..

    Again thanks for the info

I see 5100's, an AAL, and 265 KO2's in your future.

Depends on how you intend to use your rig too, keep that in mind. What may look good is not always practical. Nice looking truck welcome.

Thanks guys, so the 5100's seem simple to install. Googling them I came up with this. https://www.suspensionconnection.co...-tacoma.html?gclid=CP7Ht4Ki-dECFd22wAod1U4HWA..

Not that this is the place ill buy them from but it gives me an option of .85 to 2.5 in lift.. Would this be all I need to make the truck level and then install wheels? No rear lifting needed?

I dont plan to use the truck for any serious mudding but do plan to use for deer camp which the land is not to rough.

I have another "want" that I should have mentioned.. I do want the wheels to have an offset, I wanted the tire to come out a little bit past the finder but this is only a "Wanted look" Not important.

Now im 245 tire, would this mean the 265 @PoweredBySoy meantioned would give the fat look? A 9" wheel is what ive had in mind.

Welcome. I voted level since you stated, in caps, that you're not doing serious wheeling. A 3" lift could very likely open a can of worms and your wallet to adjustable ucas and driveline vibrations that you might regret on your daily driver. With the 5100s, the 1.75" setting should get you level. Should your wheeling needs and desires change, the 5100s aren't a big investment and you could resell them fairly easily. Keep in mind whatever you do will require an alignment asap after installing lift.

Great information, thanks. Yeah I knew the alignment had to be done and once I choose a wheel/tire combo ill have all done at the same time. Ill install kit because thats one thing I saw that had a large labor cost.

Once installed ill take wheels and tires to a local tire shop and have all that put on and add the alignment.

Thanks all for the great info. I definitely have learned something.

I'm running 265/75r17 's With 17x9 wheels. The wheels are a-12 offset , 5100 bilsteins set at 2.5. Some people say the stock uca's hit the spring with this set up , so I did the JBA upper control arms. Great ride , and I'm very happy with the look too20170205_134728.jpg

Thats a nice look, thats kind of what im looking for.. So if I may ask, are you saying the stock usa's hit the springs due to the 17" wheels? Would I need UCA's if I stay with a 16" wheel?

Also, did you only use the 5100 for the front? Or is the rear lifted as well?

Thanks for the info and thats a nice looking truck..

It's not because of the wheel size, it's because of the angle of the uca with the lift. I've heard some people say they don't....so you may not have a problem. The rear of mine is stock with the 5100 shocks

By the way.....The rear Bilstein shocks do not give any lift , if you want to lift the rear , you would have to go with an add a leaf , new spring pak , or lift blocks (I do not recommend the blocks) getting a negative offset wheel will give you the " tire sticking out" look you were asking about , and the 5100's will give you the front lift. I don't do any aggressive offloading, just hit the trails now and then, the set up I have works great for comfortable ride and a little extra clearance. Good luck and have fun with it !

So here is the final Tacoma look.. I stayed with factory size tires and wheels (Changed from a 7 in wheel to an 8 in wheel) 16 in wheel with 245/75 Hankook Dyno AT tires..

Used the 5100's for the front. Thanks to all for the ideas and info..
