    Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum. I just traded my 09' SR5 in for a very low mile 2015 SR5. The truck came with an alpine alpine ine-w960 touch screen. The steering controls were not set up and the radio was having intermittent problems getting reception, so i pulled the radio to check out the harness. Unfortunately, i found a total hack job with twisted and taped wires, and plenty of splicing into the factory harness. I am going through it, cleaning it up, and integrating an ASWC, but there is large black box that i cannot identify.

Does anyone know what this is and and what it does? And why would someone bury a cigarette lighter and power inverter in the dash? I cant tell what it goes to, but it pulls power from the radio harness, and the inverter output is spliced back into part of the factory harness. Is this something related to the backup camera?

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks,

    -Justin

Good looking truck, but horrible looking wiring! I don't envy you trying to get that mess cleaned up.

My 2015 doesn't have any of that. But you need to find out who did that wiring and go kick them in the balls.:frusty:

I'm betting the back up camera is fed off that inverter.

    Subbed for outcome.

idk about first two but the third pic looks like what you put into your head unit to connect it to your antenna. Let's you receive am/fm signal but yours looks frayed.

So it seems this mysterious black box is a lo-jack system. I'm not sure if this is worth keeping being that the last owner installed it, but right now i'm leaning towards ripping it out.

Why would the backup camera require an inverter? Is this a common approach? I don't like the idea of burying an inverter like this.

The radio conection was twisted and taped, and this is why i was having problems with reception. I cannot seem to find the right adaptor anywhere online, so i soldered the connections for now so that i can at least have a radio.

    Thanks for the help,

    -Justin

2nd gens are better, change my mind.
The camera requires a 6V source. That is probably an inverter with a 6V resistor and output.
