Sure, if you know the reputation of the shop. But that isn't always the case.

    That's right. Meant to say 4.6 but I don't think a 5.7 would fit without a lift.

4x4 has nothing to do with exploding a differential and why it failed, the rear dif is always engaged and always providing power.

the fact that you have sheered teeth tells me the dif wasn't installed 100% or something got lose in there..

4.7 single VVt-i has 320 peak torque at 3400rpm, 4.6 dual VVt-i has 327 peak torque at 3400rpm. 4.6 has more peak HP because it revs higher. Both are good truck engines for small displacement, good torque low.

I'd like to have the 4.6 because it's lighter weight, all-aluminum as opposed to the 4.7 iron block. Also timing chain vs 4.7 timing belt.

I don't think it's worth the cost and effort for alittle more torque.

Seems as if Structural steel is what I do for a living so it's safe to say metallurgy is in my wheel house. If what I wrote confused you I would be happy to explain. Familiar with AWS QC1? Maybe you're not understanding the process involved in the production of steel and aluminum. Please tell me you know there is a difference between cast / forged / extruded. Hint. Pressure and heat are needed to take steel from the cast state to a forged state. My apologies but after 25 in metallurgy I get a bit bent when someone attempts to call me out without a thorough understanding of the subject. I've attached this to help you understand.

My 2016 Tacoma Limited broke the rear axel last month. The truck had about 14,000 miles when it stopped on freeway, after it made some cracking noise. Couple days before, it made high pitch noise when I stepped on the gas pedal, even at very low speed. I planned to drop it off at dealer over the weekend, but it stopped running on Friday night.

Toyota send its engineer to Toyota dealer to inspect and replace the whole assembly.
I sold my 17 years old 1999 Tacoma, which I had never any problem to buy the new truck.

    Is this a common problem?

You are the 3rd or 4th person on this site that have had the rear fail that way while driving, hopefully they get that issue squared away soon.

Wow man not good. Yes a handful of others have reported the same here. Did you get any dealer paperwork on the issue you would care to share with us?

OP you should start a new thread to.document your issue for ease of tracking here in the forum.

It's back in the shop for the Blind Spot Monitor problem. I dropped the truck off on Sunday, and yet until today it's still in the shop. Toyota's engineer comes to the dealership to help with the repair. They are replacing the whole system, including the wire harnesses before the BSM.

I've never expect any problem with Toyota. I bought several different models (Camry, Sienna, Tacoma, Prius ) over the years, and have never encountered any problem until this Tacoma.

Toyota's maintenance booklet (comes with the truck) states the need to inspect differential if under what is described as "severe" useage. Was your truck under severe use according to your maintenance guide?

He only has 14k on the clock, does the book say it requires maintenance so early (if) he was considered Severe duty?

FWIW, I had to have the diff of my 2016 OR replaced at 28,000 miles. I bought it used with 25K on it. The first time I tried to lock the diff in the snow it wouldn't lock. Dealer replaced the wiring harness after discovering it was installed wrong from the factory. Still wouldn't lock. Toyota decided the internal switch was probably fried by the incorrect wiring job. Big fat hassle, but the new one seems fine.

I understand that no one can make a perfect vehicle every time. That's why there are warranties. But perhaps the vaunted Toyota quality may not be what it once was.
